Fotu leads Ulm to double-overtime home win

In a double-overtime thriller, ratiopharm Ulm bested Galatasaray Istanbul 103-92 at home on Wednesday. Both teams now have 1-1 records. Ismet Akpinar led the winners with 26 points, Isaac Fotu added 19, Javonte Green had 16 points, 7 rebounds and 6 steals and Dwayne Evans tallied 11 points for Ulm. Nigel Hayes led Galatasaray with 26 points and 13 rebounds and Marko Arapovic scored 20 points. Tai Webster recorded 17 points and 10 assists and Jaka Klobucar added 10 points for the visitors.

Hayes shined early with a layup-plus-foul, a triple and a couple of jumpers to give Galatasaray a 7-10 lead. A tip-in by Zach Auguste soon boosted the margin to 11-19. Akpinar and David Kraemer brought Ulm closer, 21-25, early in the second quarter. The hosts excelled on defense and 7 quick points by Green put Ulm in charge, 35-33. Hayes struck twice from downtown, but Akpinar and Green answered for a 46-43 Ulm edge at halftime. Galatasaray took the lead soon after the break before Green drew Ulm within 52-55. Klobucar and Hayes fueled a 0-11 run that seemed to seal the outcome, 52-66, at the end of the third quarter. Akpinar had other ideas, scoring 8 points in a 18-1 run that Katin Reinhardt capped with a layup to put Ulm ahead, 68-67, with over four minutes left in regulation. Webster and Arapovic combined for all the points in a 0-7 run, but a driving layup by Akpinar sent the game to overtime, 78-78. A tip-in by Evans put Ulm in charge, 84-82, with 54.3 seconds left in the first overtime. Green and Klobucar exchanged free throws before a layup by Webster forced double overtime, 85-85. Fotu took over in the second extra period with his team's first 9 points, including a triple that sealed the outcome, 92-86.

Pivotal perfomer

Fotu had 11 of his 19 points in the second overtime, including his team's first 9 points. Jump hooks, free throws and a three-pointer that made the difference.

Stellar stat

Akpinar had a career-best performance with 26 points and a performance index rating of 22. His previous career-best efforts were in a home game against Herbalife Gran Canaria on October 25, 2017 - 14 points and 13 PIR.

Game-changing moment

With Galatasaray up by 14 at the start of the fourth quarter, Ulm improved its defense and went on a game-saving 18-1 run that eventually allowed the German powerhouse to win the game.

Head Coaches

LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
ratiopharm Ulm
"This was our fourth game and we had to fight through adversity in all of them. We found a way to get ourselves back into this game. This was an impressive effort. I told the guys, 'we came back from -12 in the first half, let's make sure we come back from -14 in the second half'. The guys believed in it, they executed well and I can really tip my hat for the effort and the passion they showed today."
ERDOGAN, ERTUGRUL
Galatasaray Istanbul
"Ulm played a great game. The coach got something out of every player, tonight. Ismet Akpinar was exceptional today, he was a big factor in the game. We made a lot of changes to our roster in the summer and I think the loss today showed that we'll need some time to get used to each other. But that’s part of the process."

Players

FOTU, ISAAC
ratiopharm Ulm
“I am very proud of my team! We believed in ourselves today, even when we were down by double digits in the third quarter. Our bench gave us great minutes and we managed to find a way back into the game. I wasn’t aggressive enough in the first half, but luckily I found my rhythm later on. I started hitting some shots, which got me confidence and then I kept on shooting. I’m glad that I could help my team with that."
AKPINAR, ISMET
ratiopharm Ulm
"It was unbelievable. Double overtime against such a good team like Galatasaray, it was a crazy atmosphere, we fought until the end. I am very proud of my team. I am happy about my game, too. It was a good game for me, especially on the offensive end. I have to continue like that."
WEBSTER, TAI
Galatasaray Istanbul
"Ulm made the important shots in the end. We did not have an answer to that. Their team is filled with different playmakers who are very tough to guard and we couldn’t control all of them. They played very well as a team today. Congratulations to them!"
