Lokomotiv sets defensive record in home win over Murcia

Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar confirmed its good form the 7DAYS EuroCup by downing UCAM Murcia 70-60 at home on Wednesday. Lokomotiv improved to 2-0 in Top 16 Group E, while UCAM dropped to 1-1. Kevin Jones led the winners with 15 points and 9 rebounds and Andrey Zubkov added 9 for Lokomotiv. Jose Angel Antelo led UCAM with 16 points and 8 rebounds and Facu Campazzo scored 14. Lokomotiv held UCAM to 5 two-point shots, a new record in the competition. Six teams - Aris Thessaloniki, PAOK Thessaloniki, Benetton Olympic Fribourg, Buducnost VOLI Podgorica, Elan Chalon and Neptunas Klaipeda - had each made only 7 two-point baskets in the past. UCAM only scored 3 of 10 two-point shots before halftime, but three-point accuracy (7 of 15, 46.7%) helped the visitors to a 27-29 edge at the break. Lokomotiv kept UCAM to just 8 points in the third quarter, grabbed a double-digit lead and kept it safe until the final buzzer. UCAM hit 4 of 18 three-point shots after the break, which was among the keys to this game.

Ryan Broekhoff and Ian Vougioukas fueled a 6-0 opening run, which Jones capped with a jump hook. Billy Baron and Antelo rescued UCAM with back-to-back three-pointers and Sadiel Rojas also struck from downtown to give the visitors their first lead, 10-12. A red-hot Antelo struck twice from downtown and Campazzo added free throws, but Taylor Rochestie and Vladimir Ivlev kept Lokomotiv within 16-20 after 10 minutes. Nemanja Radovic took over with a turnaround jumper and Vitor Faverani joined the three-point shootout for a 19-25 UCAM lead. Jones and Vougioukas tried to change things for Lokomotiv and Matt Janning followed a layup with free throws to keep the hosts as close as 27-29 at halftime. Janning and Dmitry Khvostov hit consecutive jumpers in a 6-0 run that Jones capped with a layup for a 33-29 Lokomotiv lead. Baron took over with a three-point play, but he didn't find much help around. Meanwhile, a three-pointer by Evgeny Baburin highlighted a 9-0 Lokomotiv run that Ivlev capped with a layup to make it a double-digit game, 42-32. Ivlev scored again and Zubkov followed a three-pointer with free throws to break the game open at 51-37, after 30 minutes. Campazzo buried a rainbow triple and added free throws early in the fourth quarter, but a huge dunk-and-foul by Denis Zakharov kept Lokomotiv way ahead, 56-42. Vitor Benite and Baron each buried one from beyond the arc and free throws by Campazzo and Antelo got UCAM within single digits, 62-54, with four minutes left. Another triple by Campazzo made it 64-59. However UCAM missed critical shots when it mattered most and a layup by Ivlev sealed the outcome down the stretch.

Both teams return to action next week; Lokomotiv hosts Montakit Fuenlabrada while UCAM visits Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas.

Head Coaches

OBRADOVIC, SASA
Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar
"We played too fast in the first half, but I’m very proud of my players, who managed to find a way to play different in the second. Our defense made the difference, especially in the third quarter. It was a surprise for us when they scored 6 three pointers in the beginning, but we managed to overcome it, too."
QUINTANA, OSCAR
UCAM Murcia
"We played a good first quarter, but in the next two quarters, we lost energy, balance, defense and rebounds. We had a bad shot selection, with no patience looking for mismatches. We took a lot of bad shots at the end of possessions. With 5:50 left, we managed to play better defense and be ourselves, more intense and active, trying to run. We tried to return to the game, but had no error margin and the best team tonight, Lokomotiv, won. Lokomotiv is the favorite in our group, as it is playing much better since Sasa [Obradovic] joined the team. All other three teams know each other very well and every game will be very important."

Players

CAMPAZZO, FACUNDO
UCAM Murcia
"We didn't play the way we needed to get the win. We didn't play the way we usually do, with intensity. Obviously, we have to give credit to our opponents. They played very smart. We were not able to attack their defense and didn't find answers. When we played tougher defense and played with more intensity and smarter on offense, it was too late in the game."
