Alando Tucker - Lukoil Academic - EC13 (photo Lukoil)Resurgent Lukoil Academic Sofia won its second straight game and first under new head coach Dimitris Galanis, beating Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem 76-63 in the Bulgarian capital Wednesday. After Hapoel took its only lead of the game, 49-50 late in the third quarter, the hosts reeled off 10 straight points and never looked back. Sofia improved to 2-4 and dropped Jerusalem to 3-3. The result also gave Sofia a potential tiebreak advantage over Hapoel, which beat Academic in the Israeli capital by 8 last month. Alando Tucker paved the way for Sofia with 29 points on 11-of-12 free throw shooting, Davin White tallied 14 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists and Jure Lalic added 13 points. Josh Duncan paced Sofia with 15 points, Ronald Dupree scored 14 and grabbed 10 rebounds and Derwin Kitchenadded 12 points. The two teams combined to shoot 3 of 35 from downtown.

The hosts got out to an ideal start with points on their first four possessions, while holding Hapoel without a basket for four minutes to take an 8-1 lead. A Duncan tip-in and Dupree basket quickly closed the gap. Tucker and then Lalic each heated up to keep Sofia in control, but a Dupree three kept Jerusalem within 19-17 after 10 minutes. A White basket and a slam from Tucker kept Academic in the driver’s seat, 26-19. Dupree continued to fuel the Hapoel attack before Yotam Halperin took over with a three-point play to get within 30-28. White sank a big three for the hosts, but a last-second tip in by Art Parakhouski left it at 39-37 at halftime. Kieron Achara scored twice inside to restore a more-comfortable Sofia advantage. Duncan brought Jerusalem within 2 and later Kitchen free throws boosted the visitors to a 49-50 lead. However a pair of Filip Videnov baskets capped an 8-0 run to the third quarter that left Lukoil up 7. Lalic made it 10 unanswered points with the first basket of the fourth quarter. Kitchen reeled off 4 points to close the gap and Duncan drew Hapoel within 61-57. Tucker responded with a three-point play and by the time Acharon sank free throws with 2:28 to play, the hosts had all but iced the game with a 70-59 lead. Hapoel got back within 7, but it proved too little, too late as Sofia finished the game in style.

Head Coaches

GALANIS, DIMITRIOS
Lukoil Academic Sofia
"Today we are smiling. Tomorrow is a new day and we must forget what we did, we must leave this victory behind us and keep going, keep working and keep pushing ourselves to be better at practice, to do our jobs better and to play better when the time comes. I want to congratulate my players. When the team wins, please congratulate the players first. When the team loses, please blame me; I’m the coach."
GREENBERG, BRAD
Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem
"Lukoil did a great job. I want to congratulate them. The hosts played tough and put all their desire on the court. Alando Tucker was brilliant. It's getting more and more interesting in the group. We took the offensive rebound, but this wasn't enough, they were better than us in all other components. This is sports."

Players

AVRAMOV, BOZHIDAR
Lukoil Academic Sofia
"We put plenty of new ideas on the court tonight and this helped us to look better and to win. The different thing, thanks to the new head coach is that he doesn't focus the team play just on a couple of guys, he wants and he uses the maximum of each of us. And a team is a team, when we play all together."
KITCHEN, DERWIN
Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem
"We came into this game with a lot of desire to win, but sometimes this is not enough. With 63 points scored, it's impossible to win on the road in the Eurocup. We need to improve our offensive game and not get into a situation like this again. We are a very gifted offensive team and we must show it in the future."
