CSKA Moscow beats Laboral and stays undefeated
In a highly-entertaining, run-and-gun showdown, CSKA Moscow remained undefeated this season by downing Laboral Kutxa Vitoria 99-90 in the Russian capital on Thursday. CSKA improved to 2-0 in Group F, while Laboral dropped to 0-2. Sonny Weems paced the winners with 22 points and 8 rebounds. Milos Teodosic added 18 points, Nando De Colo had 17 points and 8 assists, Andrey Vorontsevich scored 13 points and blocked 4 shots, while Sasha Kaun contributed 12 points for CSKA. Mike James led Laboral with 19 points. Kim Tillie scored 14, Toko Shengelia added 11 while Colton Iverson and Fabien Causeur each got 10 for the guests. Vorontsevich fueled an 8-0 opening run, but James and Tillie allowed Laboral to get within 19-18. Teodosic and De Colo boosted CSKA's lead to 26-20 after 10 minutes. CSKA improved its defense early in the second quarter and an 8-0 run that Kaun capped with a dunk made it a 15-point game. Weems and De Colo gave the hosts a 53-36 margin at halftime. Laboral rallied after the break behind a great team effort, getting within 71-62 through three quarters and as close as 81-77 on a three-pointer by Darius Adams. Weems, De Colo and Teodosic stepped up in crunch time to seal the deal down the stretch. CSKA set a club record with 10 blocks, as did Laboral by pulling down 23 offensive rebounds.
First quarter: Run-and-gun basketball!
Aaron Jackson got CSKA going with a three-pointer, which Sasha Kaun followed with a layup-plus-foul for a 6-0 lead in just 41 seconds. Andrey Vorontsevich hit a six-meter jumper in transition, which caused Laboral to call timeout at 8-0. Mike James shined with a driving layup, but Kaun finished a three-chance CSKA offense with a close basket. James answered from downtown and free throws by Toko Shengelia kept the guests within 10-7. Vitaly Fridzon shined with a reverse layup, which Shengelia erased with a put-back basket. Vorontsevich struck from downtown and Fridzon gave CSKA a 17-9 margin. Jackson took over with an alley-oop layup for a double-digit CSKA lead. Kim Tillie sparked a response with a triple. Fabien Causeur stepped up with an off-balance layup and a put-back basket by Mirza Begic brought Laboral within 19-16. Tillie kept pushing Laboral with a put-back slam. Nando De Colo and Fernando San Emeterio exchanged layups before Milos Teodosic came off the bench to drill a three-pointer. A dunk by Vorontsevich made it 26-20 after 10 minutes.
Second quarter: CSKA makes its move
De Colo hit free throws early in the quarter. Tillie nailed a corner triple, but a fade-away jumper by Teodosic restored a 30-23 CSKA lead. Kyle Hines took over with a driving layup, which James matched at the other end. De Colo took over with an off-balance three-point play and Teodosic hit one from beyond the arc for a 38-25 CSKA margin. De Colo fed Kaun for a slam, after which Laboral called timeout at 40-25, after an 8-0 run. Tillie scored down low. Weems found his first points and a put-back dunk by Begic kept Laboral within 42-29. Hines split free throws and a step-back jumper by Weems made it a 16-point game, 45-29. Weems fired in a corner three-pointer and Vorontsevich bettered Begic's free throws with a bomb from downtown that broke the game open, 51-31. James also hit one from beyond the arc and Causeur added a jumper, but De Colo gave CSKA a 53-36 margin at halftime.
Third quarter: Laboral shows its trademark character
Causeur tried to ignite the guests' comeback with a fast break layup soon after the break. Teodosic found Weems for a corner triple. Davis Bertans made free throws, as CSKA tried to control the game with Teodosic and Jackson together on court. Tillie scored around the basket, but Weems downed another three-pointer from the same spot. After Bertans dunked, Teodosic made free throws. A three-point play by James kept Laboral within 61-47. Tillie scored down low and an off-balance basket by James forced CSKA to call a much-needed timeout at 61-51. Weems rescued CSKA with free throws, but Bertans answered with a six-meter jumper. Colton Iverson split free throws and added a layup, but back-to-back triples by Teodosic gave CSKA fresh air at 69-56. Iverson went 1-of-2 from the foul line and Darius Adams hit a three to get Laboral within single digits, 69-60. Free throws by De Colo and Iverson fixed the score at 71-62.
Fourth quarter: Laboral tries, CSKA seals the deal
Teodosic fed Hines for a power layup early in the quarter, but Bertans did even better with a three-pointer and Adams also struck from downtown in transition to bring Laboral within 73-68. De Colo answered from downtown, which Iverson erased with a dunk-and-foul. Vorontsevich fired in a three-pointer, but Shengelia singlehandedly brought Laboral within 79-74. Teodosic send a wild no-look pass to Kaun for a slam, but Adams answered from way downtown. Weems banked in a one-handed floater and Kaun added a three-point play for an 86-77 CSKA lead with over four minutes left. Iverson split foul shots and a three-pointer by Weems sealed the outcome, 89-78. De Colo took over with an off-balance three-point play and a jumper by Teodosic allowed all CSKA fans to celebrate yet another win, 94-78, way in advance.
