Darussafaka defeats ALBA, improves to 3-0

Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul used a big second half to beat visiting ALBA Berlin 82-70 on Wednesday and make a big step towards its first-ever 7DAYS EuroCup Quarterfinals berth. Darussafaka remained undefeated in the Top 16 Group E at 3-0 while ALBA dropped to 1-2. The visitors held a slim leads throughout the first half and were up 37-44 late in the second quarter. But Darussafaka cut it to 44-45 at halftime and then opened the third quarter with a 15-4 spurt and never relinquished the lead the rest of the way. Scottie Wilbekin led a balanced Darussafaka offense with 15 points. Michael Eric collected 11 points and 9 rebounds, and Howard Sant-Roos had 11 points, 6 assists and 6 steals. JaJuan Johnson, James Bell and Will Cummings scored 10 apiece in victory. Peyton Siva netted 21 points to go with 8 rebounds and 5 assists for ALBA, while Luke Sikma collected 13 points and 8 rebounds in defeat.

Darussafaka jumped in front behind 5 from Eric before a triple by Bell made it 10-4. However, ALBA answered with a 0-8 run of its own, capped by Siva hitting back-to-back three-pointers. Stefan Peno fed Dennis Clifford for a dunk, then Niels Giffey and Peno each hit threes before the first quarter ended with the visitors ahed 17-22. Johnson scored in transition and Eric had a put-back dunk to keep Darussafaka within 23-24, but ALBA gained another separation with a put-back from Tim Schneider and a three-pointer from Marius Grigonis. After a Darussafaka timeout, Wilbekin knocked down 2 triples, but Siva hit his third and fourth of the game, giving ALBA a 35-40 advantage. Siva's fastbreak basket made it 37-44 but Muhammed Baygul hit a three for the hosts, helping them get within 44-45 at halftime.

Eric scored inside and Baygul from the long range to put Darussafaka up for good after the break. A fastbreak basket by Sant-Roos and an alley-oop dunk by Johnson continued the run, then Wilbekin had a three-point play to make it 59-49. Schneider snapped a 12-2 run with a layup and followed it with a three-pointer, but Cummings and Bell re-established a double-digit margin before the end of the third quarter. Fastbreak baskets from Eric and Bell extended the lead to 69-56 early in the fourth. Siva's three-point play kept ALBA's hopes alive, but Wilbekin's runner sparked a 7-0 run, capped by a triple from Sant-Roos that made it 80-63 with 3 minutes to go, sealing the deal.

"All games in the Top 16 are unpredictable. I thought ALBA played very well in the first half and challenged us. We, on the other hand, did not play well in the first half, and had to reach down and play a very strong second half to win the game. Same time, we had six players in double figures, and another player a basket away from double figures, which is pretty positive. And we held another high-scoring team to 70 points, which is very positive. We will see ALBA next week; they are a good team and we will have to be ready. Howard Sant-Roos has been playing well for a while, and I think he has made great progress with us, and I hope he continues because he is a very good player. One of the very significant things that happened tonight was the play of Muhammed Baygul, who really helped us to stabilize the score at the end of the first half, and in the second half again came in and did a great job offensively and defensively. And that’s a good lesson for kids and players; you can’t put your head down when you don’t play a lot. Sometimes you got to be patient, and take your chance when it comes. Baygul is big part of the reason we won the game today."

"We began the game with good intensity, but we had an important problem with personal fouls. Despite me making substitutions, we had four players with 3 fouls before halftime; it was very bad for us. Afterwards we played with intensity, but Darussafaka played in good rhythm and for us it was very difficult to keep up at their level."
