Walter Hodge and Kyle Landry led the way as Zenit St. Petersburg defeated VEF Riga 66-74 to edge closer to a spot in the Last 32. Zenit improved to 4-4 in Group D and could advance by the end of the night if other results go its way. VEF dropped to 1-7 and saw its last chance to reach the Last 32 go up in smoke. Hodge scored 23 points and dished 7 assists and Landry tallied 14 points, 12 rebounds and 2 blocks, while Cameron Jones added 13 points for the victors. Zenit pushed ahead in the second quarter to take a 36-45 halftime lead. VEF rallied to within 2 in the third quarter, but Zenit held on and pulled away for good in the fourth.

Robinson scored the game’s first 5 points to start VEF on its right foot. Hodge scored twice for Zenit before Dmitrii Gordeev trimmed the deficit to 1. A second Robinson triple boosted the hosts to 16-10. Landry scored inside and Dejan Borovnjak’s three-point play on the offensive glass brought Zenit within 1 again. Mareks Mejeris hit from downtown before Hodge made it 21-19 after 10 minutes. Hodge buried a three to start the second quarter and Jones added another to push the visitors to 21-27. Timma’s basket-plus-foul made it a 1-point game, but threes from Andrey Koshcheev and Landry kept Zenit in control. Koshcheev made it 28-34 from the line. Jakovics scored twice to bring VEF within one possession, but Hodge sank a crucial three and Jones made it 33-41. He scored twice more to give the visitors a double-digit advantage before a Timma layup closed the half at 36-45.

Timma scored the first 5 points of the second half as VEF stormed back. His triple later in the quarter made it 46-49. After Landry free throws, Fall converted a three-point play to bring his team within 2. The teams traded baskets for several minutes with VEF closing within 2, but Zenit keeping a 56-58 lead through three quarters. Baskets in the paint by Borovnjak, Hodge and Jones gave Zenit a promising 56-64 lead. Fall tried to keep VEF close, but a Hodge triple extended the difference to 9. Head Coaches

MAZURS, NIKOLAJS
VEF Riga
"We lacked athleticism under the baskets. I wouldn't say that our players didn't fight or played careless. We just played against a faster and more athletic team. In order to win we had to play with less mistakes. Also, we needed to play more aggressive basketball and get to the free throw line more often. Then the pressure on the opponent would be a lot different. Even though now we are eliminated, we will play the remaining two games with our best effort."
KARASEV, VASILY
Zenit St Petersburg
"We came here to win, but we also expected a lot tougher game than the one we had back in first round in St. Petersburg. We missed two key defensive players Dmitry Kulagin and Evgeny Valiev, who didn't travel with us to this game. However, others stepped up and did a good job. During the game we were left with one point guard, but even with that we got the job done. That was very important for us."

Players

TIMMA, JANIS
VEF Riga
"We started the game well doing all the right things. In the second quarter we had some mistakes as we didn't stop their transition game and didn't do a good enough job of boxing them out. Therefore, we were losing rebounds and that was the breaking point. In the third quarter we came back, but in fourth quarter we lacked energy and luck."
