Gran Canaria holds off late Murcia charge

Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas survived a late UCAM Murcia surge to snatch a 94-85 victory on Tuesday. The win was its first of the Top 16 to rise to 1-2 in Group E, which matches Murcia. Kyle Kuric was 4 for 4 from downtown for 18 points to lead Gran Canaria. Richard Hendrix posted 13 points and 8 rebounds off the bench, Royce O’Neale scored 11, Bo McCalebb tallied 10 points and 6 assists and Eulis Baez also had 10 points for the winners, who made 9 of 18 threes (50%). Jose Angel Antelo paced Murcia with 19 points, Billy Baron added 12 points, Facundo Campazzo posted 11 points and 8 assists, Nemanja Radovic also scored 11 and Vitor Benite had 10. The visitors trailed by as many as 23 before storming back in the second half to get within 4, but Gran Canaria held on down the stretch.

Back-to-back threes by Sadiel Rojas and Campazzo gave Murcia a promising 2-8 start. But soon Gran Canaria took control when O’Neale scored 7 points in a 12-0 run that Kuric capped with a three-pointer to make it 22-15. Three free throws by Albert Oliver gave the hosts a comfortable 29-19 cushion after 10 minutes. Gran Canaria continued adding to its lead, which reached the 20s on a McCalebb layup and peaked at 54-31 on a bucket by Hendrix. Baron’s first basket made it 56-37 at the break. Campazzo hit back-to-back threes early in the third quarter to revive his team. Radovic scored twice and Benite added a triple to make it 62-54 midway through the quarter. Kyle Kuric scored 8 points in the last 140 seconds of the quarter to make it 79-68 with 10 minutes to go. Murcia pushed back early in the fourth quarter as Antelo scored twice in a 0-7 push to get the visitors within 5 before Gran Canaria called timeout. Baron connected from downtown to make it 82-78, however Gran Canaria held the visitors scoreless for the next three and a half minutes to regain a double-digit lead on a Ryan Hollins put-back. Antelo hit a triple and then free throws to give Murcia hope at 88-83. Sasu Salin iced the game with free throws in the final minute.

Head Coaches

CASIMIRO, LUIS
Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas
"In the first half we played great except for the first minutes of the game, then we improved our defense and played with rhythm in offense. In the second half, UCAM Murcia played more aggressive and grabbed some rebounds. They started to believe in the comeback and shooting better. We have to process their aggressiveness for the next game."

Players

HOLLINS, RYAN
Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas
"It is an important win for us to return to winning in the EuroCup and to remember the things we do great. We defended well, played together and looked for the extra pass. Our strength is in the numbers and each player contributed with good minutes. That is important to become the best we can be."
