Fenerbahce escapes from Barcelona with road win

Fenerbahce Istanbul edged FC Barcelona Lassa 72-73 in a thriller on Friday at Palau Blaugrana. Fenerbahce won its second game in a row to start the season, while Barcelona slipped to 1-1. Guards Kostas Sloukas and Bobby Dixon scored 15 points apiece to pace the winners. Bogdan Bogdanovic followed with 12 points and Ekpe Udoh scored 10 and pulled down 8 rebounds. Tyrese Rice led the way for Barcelona with 19 points and 6 assists. Stratos Perperoglou added 14 points and Ante Tomic posted 12 points and 8 boards. Fenerbahce leaned on fantastic three-point shooting (11 of 21, 52.4%), which helped overcome Barcelona’s 31-25 rebounding edge. Next week, Fenerbahce takes on Zalgiris Kaunas and Barcelona meets Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade.

Fenerbahce led 19-21 after an exciting first quarter. Stefan Peno and Sasha Vezenkov stepped up for Barcelona early in the second quarter and a layup by Joey Dorsey tied it at 25-25. Nikola Kalinic and Udoh rescued the guests with respective jumpers. Dixon and Sloukas nailed consecutive three-pointers, but Rice kept Barcelona within 36-40 at halftime. A layup-plus-foul by Rice and back-to-back triples by Justin Doellman and Perperoglou put Barcelona ahead 46-45 in the third quarter. Free throws by Bogdanovic and Udoh gave Fenerbahce a 51-52 lead after 30 minutes. Udoh dunked and Dixon followed a triple with a four-point play to boost the guests' lead to 55-62 early in the fourth quarter. Dixon kept pacing Fenerbahce and a three-pointer by Nikola Kalinic kept Fenerbahce way ahead, 61-69, with four minutes left. Vesely took over with an alley-oop layup, but Oleson and Dorsey gave Barcelona hope at 67-71. Rice did better with a bomb from downtown and Vezenkov made it 72-73 with a minute left. Dixon and Rice exchanged missed shots and Fenerbahce circulated the ball to avoid a foul and seal the outcome.

"First of all, congratulation to the winners. They played a good game and have the quality and experience, but I also have to give credit to our team, which fought until the end despite all of our problems against a team that played the EuroLeague final last year. We should have won this game, according to the way we played for 40 minutes. We missed some details and of course, we had the last offense to win the game. We didn't win, but anyway, I think that it is important in the EuroLeague this year to handle every result well to be able to mentally overcome big losses and be careful after big wins. It is all about this. Like I said, we should have won. It is not going to be easy, every game is difficult and we have to continue. When we bring back a player, we lose someone; it is sport. We will evaluate Justin's injury tomorrow morning, but every player is important to us right now. Including this game, we will play five times in 10 days. The schedule is really tough and we need our roster. Our doctors will make an effort to bring back Justin, like the other guys. The thing about Fenerbahce is that they put a lot of pressure on the ball because they have two great rim protectors behind the guards like Ekpe Udoh and Jan Vesely. The guys behind the guards are able to help them. Offensively, I can say that whenever we had patience, giving 3, 4, 5 passes, we had a lot of options. When we were not patient, we did exactly what they wanted us to do. Fenerbahce had the same core of players for two or three years and only had one change - Nunnally for Hickman, so their team defense is better than anyone else's."
OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO

"It was the game we expected, difficult as always in Palau Blaugrana, despite all the problems they have right now, with important players who are not with the team right now. We prepared the game expecting a tough game no matter what, and this is how it was. You can tell it is the beginning of the season; we have to improve a lot of things, but even with that, I am happy with the way we played tonight, fighting a lot and controlling the game until we got a 9-point lead in the fourth quarter. We deserved to get an easy win, but this is basketball. Barcelona has a lot of individual talent and is a good team that knows how to play in this situation. They had the last shot to win the game, but we played good defense. I am happy with the win. We have a lot of work ahead of us and know we are facing a tough calendar, but I believe that the most important thing for my team is that we needed all of our players to help the team, which didn't happen tonight."

Players

FC Barcelona Lassa
"A lot of luck plays in all of sports, and we are currently in a bad patch. We got to stay positive and keep working. We are good players, we have a good team and a great coach, and we will turn it around. It is a 1-point loss to a very good team, but you are always disappointed when you put yourself in a position to win the game and you don’t do it. We are disappointed, but we got to keep going. "
TOMIC, ANTE
FC Barcelona Lassa
"It was an interesting game that we lost in the last seconds. We did not make a foul at the end, that would probably buy us a chance to have a final shot, but we did not make a foul. It is difficult to get a rhythm; we don’t have enough players for practices. But, that is not an excuse, just the way things are. Tonight Justin Doellman also got injured. I just hope we are done with bad luck and we will continue like a normal team the rest of the season."
DATOME, LUIGI
Fenerbahce Istanbul
"The key at the end was last defense, Kostas Sloukas played incredible defense on Rice. We had a chance to make a couple of breaks to keep the lead in the game, but it was never enough; they always came back. They are great players and a great team. It is not easy to win here in Barcelona. But, better to win by 1 than lose by 20. Sloukas and Dixon are an incredible point guard combo. They read the game, know when to attack, when to involve teammates."
BOGDANOVIC, BOGDAN
Fenerbahce Istanbul
"We hustled as a team, and everybody played great on defense. One moment we made it look like it is easy, we were up 8 or 9 points, but they have quality as players and came back to make it a close game. It is a good and important win for us. Barcelona is a really tough opponent here in Barcelona. These 1-point wins we had are only about character."
MUHAMMED, ALI
Fenerbahce Istanbul
"We feel pretty good. It is hard to come up in here and play. Barcelona is a really, really good team, they have great offensive players. Getting this win on the road is big for us. It is good feeling to start Euroleague with two wins. It is not easy to win in this league, so every win counts."
