Carroll's three lifts Real past Maccabi

In a thriller than literally came down to the final second, Real Madrid registered its second win in the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Regular Season by edging Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv 86-85 at WiZink Center in the Spanish capital on Thursday. Real improved to 2-0 in the standings while Maccabi dropped to 0-2. Jaycee Carroll became Real's hero by hitting the game-winning three-pointer with 2.4 seconds remaining. Jordan Mickey led the winners with 16 points and 11 rebounds, Carroll added 14 points, Anthony Randolph 11 and Facu Campazzo 10. Scottie Wilbekin led Maccabi with 22 points and John DiBartolomeo and Elijah Bryant each added 15 apiece for the guests. Campazzo and Randolph shined early, but Wilbekin and Othello Hunter fueled a 0-7 run that gave Maccabi a 20-22 edge late in the first quarter. Sergio Llull and Mickey stepped up for Real and then Fabien Causeur gave the hosts a 50-44 edge at halftime. Maccabi opened the second half with a 0-12 run, but Randolph and Campazzo helped Real regain a 63-58 margin late in the third quarter. It all came down to the final seconds, in which Wilbekin singlehandedly put Maccabi ahead, 83-85, with 10.9 seconds left. Real called timeout and Carroll buried the game-winning shot. Quincy Acy missed at the other end right at the buzzer.

Nate Wolters got Maccabi going with a stop-and-pop floater and Wilbekin added 5 quick points for a 3-7 lead. Campazzo fed Edy Tavares and Randolph for respective dunks. Randolph soon added a triple to give Real its first lead, 10-9. Tarik Black and Tyler Dorsey stepped up for the guests, but Campazzo restored a 17-15 Real edge. Jeffery Taylor nailed his trademark corner three-pointer, but Wilbekin and Dorsey fueled a 0-7 run which Hunter capped with a dunk for a 20-22 Maccabi lead. Mickey tied the game, 22-22, after 10 minutes. Mickey kept pacing Madrid with 6 points early in the second quarter, but three-pointers by DiBartolomeo and Bryant tied the game again, 28-28. Mickey hit a jumper and Carroll added a big triple for 33-30 Real lead. Bryant and Gabriel Deck traded baskets, then Llull followed a driving layup with a bomb from downtown for a 40-32 Real margin. Bryant rescued Maccabi and a put-back layup by Jake Cohen kept the guests within 43-38. Wilbekin and DiBartolomeo each hit a triple, but Causeur allowed Real to reach halftime with a 50-44 lead. Acy, DiBartolomeo and Wolters buried one apiece from beyond the arc in a 0-12 Maccabi run highlighted by Black's dunk in traffic, good for a 50-56 score. Randolph stepped up with a driving layup and a wild three-point play. Campazzo and Taylor each hit one from beyond the arc to put Madrid back ahead, 63-58, after a 13-2 run. DiBartomoleo and Cohen combined for 6 points late in the third quarter to tie it again, 65-65, after 30 minutes. Hunter and Bryant provided another lead change, 65-69, early in the fourth quarter. Carroll downed a triple, Causeur scored in penetration and a layup by Deck tied the game, 72-72. Wilbekin followed a three-pointer with a layup and soon added a floater for a 77-79 Maccabi edge with 3 minutes left. Mickey and Bryant traded baskets and Deck tied it again, 81-81, in the next-to-last minute. Wilbekin hit free throws and so did Mickey for an 83-83 score with 27.5 seconds to go. Wilbekin hit a floater over Mickey, but Madrid called a timeout and Carroll did better with a three-pointer with 2.4 seconds remaining. Acy missed an off-balance shot at the buzzer.

Pivotal performer

Mickey came off the bench and made things happen for Real. He finished the game with 16 points on 4-of-5 two-point shooting and 8-of-8 on free throws, a near-perfect shooting performance. He added 11 rebounds, an assist and 6 fouls drawn for the highest PIR in this game: 30.

Game-changing moment

The game came down to the final seconds and that changed its outcome. After Mickey hit free throws for an 83-83 tie, Maccabi called a timeout with 27.5 seconds to go and Wilbekin sank a floater in the lane to put the guests in charge, 83-85. Madrid stopped the game, Llull inbounded the ball and Carroll came off a screen to pick up his pass and swish a shot from downtown which gave Los Blancos the win.

Stellar stat

Assists and rebounds made the difference in this game. Maccabi only had 9 assists in this game and Real reached 18 - Llull lead his team with 5. Madrid outrebounded Maccabi 38-33, pulling down 14 offensive rebounds and allowing its opponents to get only 8. Those extra 6 possessions always make the difference in such a close game.

Did you notice?

Maccabi made only 7 turnovers, tying its lowest mark in the EuroLeague since March 2014. It was not enough to win the game. Indeed, Maccabi has the two highest PIR marks for losing teams in EuroLeague games this season, reaching 93 against Khimki in Round 1 and 87 against Real.

Next game:

Both teams return to Turkish Airlines EuroLeague action on Thursday, October 17. Real visits Zalgiris Kaunas. Maccabi faces Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade in its home opener.

"We had a winning shot. Wilbekin got a two, Jaycee [Carroll] got a three. I think we were able to control the game in the first half, not playing very good, and then our entrance in the second half was terrible. We started 0-9 so they got the advantage and started believing they could win. They made a lot of switches in pick-and-rolls and tried to stop us in the end. We were not hitting shots and not playing good offensively, and they were making big shots so we were a little bit behind. But we always stayed focused and well, in the end, it was a final decision when Wilbekin was hot, but also Jaycee at the end. The problem is was we probably lost a little bit of energy and started the third quarter very slow, so they came back, got some advantages and started believing that they could win the game. For us, I think that everybody tried to give their best and in the second half, we had to increase our level of defense. There were two different parts in this game - in the first part, in the opening two quarters, it was very open for both teams. And the second had a slower game and we were not able to read those situations offensively. We suffered until the end, but finally, we got the victory."

"The feeling that I have with Jaycee is that the team knows how to look for him and of course, he has a great scoring instinct, which he always had. He was sidelined for a week but if you saw him practice this week, you wouldn't say he had been out. He quickly came back in very good phsyical shape and was able to hit shots that opened their defense. I remember he missed an open one, but he also hit the last one to win the game. It was one of the options we had off the timeout, trying to inbound the ball and run the floor, considering their defense at that moment. I am happy for Jaycee because he hit the game-winning shot, but also because a lot of my players did a really good job for the team tonight."

SFAIROPOULOS, IOANNIS
Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv
"I think that we played a great offensive game tonight. Defensively, we were very good only in the second half. I think we gave up some easy points in the first half, but our defense in the third period, and also in the last period, was really important to stay in the game and have big possibilities to win the game. In the end, 2 missed defensive rebounds made the difference; if we would have finished our defense against 1 or 2 missed shots with defensive rebounds, we would have had a different option in this game. I spoke to the players in the locker room. For sure, when you lose like that it is not easy, but from one side, we are sad that we missed this opportunity. From the other side, we need to keep our heads up, to continue, to start with the home games that we have now, and I want to call on our fans to fill in the gym for the first home game after so many times in the EuroLeague. I want to congratulate Real Madrid and to wish good luck to the team and their coach."

"We have to fight for every win and tonight's game was difficult against a team that puts a lot of traps on defense. In the end, Jaycee's talent made the difference with another game-winning three-point shot. We are happy for the win, above all. The most important thing is getting the win, but it was not our bad game, especially on offense. As I said, they had a lot of defensive traps and their switches made us be a little bit out of place. They took us out of our rhythm, but in the end, we managed to fight and win this kind of game. This team has proved that it can play balanced games, even rally and take the lead, and tonight is another proof of that. Jaycee is a killer in crunch time. He gave us fresh air with a couple of three-pointers in a tough moment and in the end, he decided the game with that great shot. We are also happy to get Salah [Mejri] back. He will give us a lot of positive things and help us a lot."
CARROLL, JAYCEE
Real Madrid
"I am very excited about the shot going in. They play we ran came out perfectly. Sergi [Llull] attacked, Edy [Tavares] set a nice screen and Sergi found me for a nice look to try to make a three-pointer to put us up a point. I am excited to get back into basketball and do whatever I can to help our team. It is fun coming in and trying to change the energy of the game, trying to do something different and make things happen. That is the fun part of coming in with the second unit, with Sergi, getting the energy going and trying to change the face of the game."
MICKEY, JORDAN
Real Madrid
"They are a tough team. They play physical, they play hard through the whole game. We looked like we had some mental lapses but we are able to put it together and get the victory... Down the stretch, our defense was locked in and we were able to get rebounds, get out and score. Rebounding is a thing that you just have to go up and get it. I am trying to help my team win out here."
WILBEKIN, SCOTTIE
Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv
"I don't like to be happy after wins, but it's positive looking forward because last week in Khimki we weren't ready to play, we were a step behind on defense and offense. We improved this week and once again, it's hard to be happy about it because we had that game won, we were one defensive stop away. Moving forward, there are a lot of positive things we can take from this game, we played good team defense and stuck to the game plan, that's how you win games, tighten it up a bit."
