CSU Asesoft Ploiesti stunned 89-97 2012 Eurocup champion BC Khimki Moscow Region 89-97 on the road in Group E on Wednesday. Gerald Lee starred for Ploiesti with 24 points and 7 rebounds, Jonte Flowers and Alhaji Mohammed scored 18 apiece, while Chris Dunn netted 14 more. James Augustine and Mike Green nailed 17 points each for the losers and Petteri Koponen added 16.

Ploiesti played a close to perfect offensive first quarter to lead 22-28 at its end. The guests extended the margin to double digits early in the second quarter, 26-37. The Moscow Region side tried to come back and closed within 34-42, but the guests remained on fire to finish the first half up 43-55. The home team opened the third quarter with an outstanding 19-2 run to take a 62-57 lead with four minutes to go in the quarter. However the Romanian champs scored 6 points in the last 10 seconds of the quarter to close within 64-63 and stay alive. The guests took again the lead, 66-67, early in the final quarter, and then the teams exchanged leads, but Ploiesti was able to score 5 unanswered points to get a 75-82 edge with less than three minutes to go. In an exciting finish, the visitors inflated the difference again to double figures, 81-91, and celebrated a resounding victory.

“We started sluggishly; there was no individual responsibility or energy on defense. In the third quarter we have shown that we can do it, and we caught our opponent, as it should be, but in the final quarter we were down by 3 or 4 points. We have a short bench, we are tired, but the season has just started, so we cannot talk about fatigue, because we have to play with concentration. We made many mistakes, especially against the zone defense that our opponent used to bring down the tempo. Our combinations didn't work, and the players couldn't decide the outcome of the particular moments.”

“First of all, I would like to congratulate BC Khimki on this game. It was a fair play game. I’m very happy because of the result. We started very well; in first two quarters we showed good offensive percentages, but our defense also worked well. At the same time BC Khimki missed some open shots. In the third quarter we lost our advantage very quickly but later again controlled the course of the game. At the moment I thought it was all we could do tonight. In the last quarter we started playing good zone defense and performed excellent in the offense. This is a very big victory for us, and a big surprise for all Eurocup. We came here to catch a good game, and to prove to ourselves that we could beat Euroleague players. This is the biggest victory for Asesoft until now because for me BC Khimki means Euroleague.”
