John Holland - Cajasol Seville - EC12 (photo Spartak SPB)Tomas Satoransky’s last-second tip-in lifted Cajasol Seville to a 66-64 victory over Spartak St. Petersburg in the Last 16 Group K finale. After Spartak used a 0-22 first-half run to dominate the proceedings, Satoransky starred as he led the hosts back in the third quarter and finished a strong night with the game winner. It was Cajasol’s first win in the group and allowed it to avoid being the only winless last 16 team. Spartak slipped to 3-3, but had already clinched second place in Group K and a spot in the quarterfinals, where it will face Budivelnik. John Holland paced the hosts with 23 points and Satoransky finished with 11 points and 5 assists. Loukas Mavrokefalides led Spartak with 19 points, Vladimir Dragicevic netted 14 plus 7 rebounds and Josh Carter scored 12 in defeat.

Cajasol struck first through Holland and led 9-3 after Ondrej Balvin’s basket-plus-foul. But the remaining seven minutes of the quarter belonged solely to Spartak. Mavrokefalides tied the game and Dragicevic put Spartak ahead. Darius Johnson-Odom stretched the visitors’ run to 10 unanswered points and Dragicevic’s 8th points of the quarter made it 9-17 after 10 minutes. Carter added a three-pointer and a three-point play before Spartak wrapped up a 0-22 charge, during which it held Cajasol scoreless for more than 11 minutes. Joan Saste broke the ice for Cajasol. Satoransky set Balvin up for a slam and Saste buried a triple to make it 16-27. Spartake responded with the next 5 points to remain safely ahead. Rob Blakney free throws put 21-35 on the scoreboard at halftime.

Holland came out of the second half determined and a Sastre layup trimmed the deficit to 28-37. Back-to-back triples from Fedor Dmitriev and Mavrokefalides kept Spartak in the driver’s seat, but Holland hit back from downtown. His free throws made it 35-46 midway through the third quarter. Satoransky took the bull by its hors with 7 points in an 11-0 run to finish the quarter and bring Cajasol within 46-48. Holland tied it and put Cajasol ahead for the first time since the opening minutes with a three-point play to open the fourth quarter. Mavrokefalides answered with 4 straight points, but Seville stayed close. Blakney made it 58-60 with a three-pointer midway through the fourth quarter. Then Holland tied it from the line. The game came down to the closing minute. A Luka Bogdanovic triple put Cajasol up 66-64, but Janis Strelnieks found an open Nikita Kurbanov for a slam to tie the game. The hosts had one final chance and went to Balvin, who missed, but Satoransky was there to tip in the rebound and give Cajasol the win.

Cajasol Seville
"The game has two stories. One in the first half. We started well, but in one moment we stopped ourselves. We failed to score a basket and then again on the next and the next. However, in the second half we didn't think like in the first and we were able to overcome. During the break I told them we cannot think about the past, we have to think about the present. Triguero and Balvin have different characteristics. Balvin has a good hand... But these things can change in one day. He is improving but he needs to consolidate."
ZDOVC, JURE
Spartak St Petersburg
"Congratulations to Aito and the Cajasol players. Psychologically, this was an important game for both teams because we had both lost our last domestic games. We came to win. We knew it was very difficult game because Cajasol is a good team. We tried to win. I think Cajasol had better luck than us. In the second half, Cajasol played much better offensively and we made many defensive mistakes. We lost our offensive rhythm and Cajasol was luckier in the end."
