Logan leads Lietuvos Rytas’s rout of Nizhny

David Logan had one of the best games of his EuroCup career to lead Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius to a convincing 63-97 victory over Nizhny Novgorod on Tuesday at CEC Nagorny. Logan scored 30 points on 5-of-10 three-point shooting and added 6 assists and 3 steals for a career-best performance rating of 38 as Rytas collected its first Top 16 victory to improve to 1-2 in Group G, while dropping Nizhny to the same record. Rokas Giedraitis drilled 5 of 7 three-pointers for 16 point and Corey Fisher scored 11 for the winners, who came within 1 assist of a club record with 26. Rytas took charge early in the second quarter and never looked back to lead by 10 at halftime and 22 through three quarters. Petr Gubanov led five Nizhny scorers in double figures with 13 points and 9 rebounds. Tomislav Zubcic added 12 points, Ivan Strebkov had 11 points and 5 assists and DeAndre Kane and Kenny Boynton scored 10 points apiece.

Zubcic and Gubanov started strong to push the hosts to a 7-3 edge, however 5 straight points from Julius Jucikas gave Rytas its first lead. Logan later capped a 0-7 Rytas run with a basket-plus-foul to make it 10-15. Nizhny responded with a 6-0 push of its own, but Fisher’s triple restored a slim Rytas edge, 21-22, after 10 minutes. The teams traded shots at the start of the second quarter until Rytas scored on three straight possessions for a 25-32 advantage. Boynton narrowed the gap to 32-34 with a three-pointer, but Logan netted 5 points in a 2-10 run to finish the half that gave Rytas a 36-46 lead at the break. Nizhny came within 8 three times in the third quarter, the last at 45-53 on Gubanov free throws, but Logan had 2 assists and 2 points in a 0-6 push and later Giedraitis hit a triple in a 0-8 run that took the margin to 20 points. Logan nailed a three for his 10thpoint of the quarter the end the third at 53-75. Logan put the game on ice with 5 points in a 0-8 start to the fourth quarter that made it 53-83 and then added 5 more points and an assist in another 0-9 charge as Rytas cruised to a big win.

Head coach: PACESAS, TOMAS

Head Coaches

STALBERGS, ARTURS
Nizhny Novgorod
"We played quality basketball only in the first 10 minutes. Unfortunately, we have a lot of players in our roster who are not healthy this moment. Still it’s not an excuse for a game like that. I’m not satisfied with our defense; besides we didn’t keep the pregame plan. There was no concentration at all."
PACESAS, TOMAS
Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius
"Tonight we were better in every component of the game, made fewer mistakes, played better on rebounds and scored with high percentages. We took the game under our control and indeed deserved the win. I’m happy for my team that we could recover after tough losses in the first two rounds, though it was not that easy."

Players

ZUBCIC, TOMISLAV
Nizhny Novgorod
"Everything we talked about before the game we didn’t do. We made a lot of mistakes on defense and as a result got such a big difference. We played two games in three days, but it’s not an excuse. It was just a bad day for us."
LOGAN, DAVID
Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius
"It was a great game for us. We played good on defense, transitioned a lot and the coach made it good. We expected a tough game as Nizhny played at home, but tonight we were better because everybody in the team stuck to the plan. Next game we just need to continue, keep the same game plan and play the way we did tonight. "
