Lokomotiv holds off Fuenlabrada to claim playoff spot

Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar outlasted Montakit Fuenlabrada 87-91 on Wednesday to remain unbeaten in the Top 16 and advance to the quarterfinals. Lokomotiv improved to 4-0 in Group E and can clinch first place – and with it home-court advantage in the quarterfinals – next week with a victory or a loss by fewer than 15 points against second-placed Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas. Fuenlabrada fell to 1-3. Taylor Rochestie paced the winners with 17 points, of which 11 came in the second quarter. Mardy Collins, Ian Vougioukas and Matt Janning each added 15 points and Collins also collected 9 rebounds to help the visitors dominate the glass 17-39. Andrey Zubkov chipped in 12 points for the winners. Ivan Paunic led Fuenlabrada with 20 points, Pako Cruz tallied 17 points and 7 assists and Rolands Smits scored 10 in defeat.

Paunic scored 5 points in an 8-0 first-quarter run that gave Fuenlabrada an 11-7 edge, which grew to 17-11 after a Luka Rupnik three-pointer. Zubkov scored twice in a 0-8 Lokomotiv run that turned things around before Smits ended the first quarter with the hosts up 22-21. The game featured more swing in the second quarter with Rochestie taking charge for Lokomotiv. The guard amassed 11 second-quarter points in pushing the visitors to a 38-43 lead, but Paunic scored 7 points in the two minutes before halftime, including a three-pointer that evened the score at 45-45 at the break. Zubkov landed a pair of critical blows for Lokomotiv with two three-pointers within 70 seconds of one another to boost his team to 55-62. The margin reached 8 on Vladimir Ivlev’s basket-plus-foul and Kevin Jones made it 61-67 at the end of the third quarter. Cruz took control with a pair of triples early in the fourth quarter that carried Fuenlabrada to within 71-72, but 5 straight points from Mardy Collins kept the visitors in control. David Wear closed the gap to 78-81and later Rupnik made it 85-88 with a three with 90 seconds left, however each time Lokomotiv had a response and free throws by Collins and Janning iced the win.

"I would firstly like to congratulate Lokomotiv for their win during a very difficult game. They had controlled the game, not by a lot, but they had always been a little bit of a step ahead of us. I think there are very little things to analyze; I am very proud of the work we have done, because in a lot of the situations we did what was asked of us and that was one of the main problems we were having there. We were defeated in the rebounding from the very start in the game, at half time we only had 6 rebounds, they had twice as many as we did, and that’s a problem with a team like theirs, who has a high percentage in shooting from all areas. The little numbers of times they actually don’t score, giving them the rebound is a gift and it turns complicated from there. I don’t need to talk a lot more, because if I start mentioning where we had our disadvantages; it was mostly rebounds as in all other areas we were right where we should have been. I am fully satisfied with the work they have done and what I’m going home with. The technical things we had planned were all done and that’s the final fact that I’d like to keep."

"I would like to congratulate both teams; it was a very nice game. Every time a team plays at home, there is good energy and that was clearly present today. We knew that we were not going to have the same game we had at home, we had difficulty scoring and they had that factor a little easier than we did. We struggled and made mistakes in the first quarter. In the end we played a more mature game and controlled it more and we deserved the win."
