Shved explodes for 32 as Khimki edges Ulm

Khimki Moscow Region edged ratiopharm Ulm 85-84 on Wednesday to move within a victory of a spot in the quarterfinals. Khimki improved to 3-1 and sits second in Group F, while Ulm remained winless through four Top 16 games. Alexey Shved led the winners with 32 points on 8-of-13 three-point shooting and 8 assists. Nobel Boungou-Colo added 16 points and Viacheslav Zaytsev had 10 points and 3 steals for Khimki, which never trailed after the opening minutes. Khimki collected 11 steals and forced 19 turnovers, which were keys to the outcome. Augustine Rubit posted 20 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, Raymar Morgan scored 16, Taylor Braun 14 and Chris Babb 11. Khimki led by 14 in the fourth quarter before the visitors went on a 0-13 run, but were unable to complete the comeback.

Khimki jumped out to a strong start, as three-pointers by Zaytsev, Boungou-Colo, Shved and Sergey Monya gave the hosts a 13-4 lead midway through the first quarter. Da'Sean Butler and Chris Babb tried to change things for Ulm, but Zaytsev dunked and Boungou-Colo followed a dunk with free throws to keep Khimki comfortably ahead, 20-9, after 10 minutes. David Kraemer and Stanislav Ilnitskiy exchanged driving baskets early in the second quarter and a three-pointer by Egor Viatlsev gave Khimki a 25-11 margin. Braun joined the three-point shootout and Morgan followed with a layup-plus-foul to bring Ulm a bit closer, 28-21. Jacob Pullen hit a three in a 7-0 run to keep Khimki firmly in control, but three-point plays by Rubit and Morgan and a pair of baskets by Jonas Wohlfarth featured in a 2-10 run to get within 39-33 at halftime. Ulm continued the third quarter where it left off by scoring the first 5 points and getting within 1 on a Braydon Hobbs three-pointer. Ulm twice more came within 1, but Khimki always had an answer. Shved came alive with 7 points in an 11-3 Khimki run to restore a double-digit advantage, 59-49. Ulm halved the deficit only to see Shved strike twice more from behind the arc. A Robbie Hummel three to end the third quarter gave the hosts a 70-58 cushion. Butler opened the fourth quarter with a three and Ulm got within 8, however Pullen and Boungou-Colo each hit threes as the margin grew to 78-64. However Ulm reeled off 13 unanswered points through five different scorers to get within 1 and reawaken the game. Shved came to Khimki’s rescue with his eighth three and his 30th points to make it 81-77. He added free throws to give the hosts breathing room and they would need it as Babb’s three in the closing seconds made it a 1-point game, but Ulm ran out of time.

"Very hard game. But it’s a very important win for us. Before this game and after the first one in Germany I said that Ulm is a very dangerous team in fastbreaks, one of the best in Europe. It has excellent transition and excellent shooters. When we played good defense, we managed to stop their transition and eventually had a good result. In the first and second halves we had two possibilities to make easy baskets for going with a 14-point advantage. When we didn’t make the baskets, they made easy ones and came back to the game. Finally, we deserved this victory."

"First of all, congratulations to Khimki for this win. When you lose just by 1 point against one of the best teams in Europe and even on the road, normally you should be satisfied with your performance. The way we played three quarters and the way we fought in the end does make me proud. But also I need to criticize that again we had a soft first quarter against Khimki. We turned the ball over too much and gave up too many second chances. I’m really happy that we were able to give Khimki a tough fight in both games. In the end it comes down to Shved’s play that made the difference. We lost chances to compete in the EuroCup, but it’s a question of pride for us. Every game that we have a chance to play, with FC Bayern Munich on the road, or with Lietkabeis at home, we need to have the desire to compete. It’s a privilege to be in the EuroCup and play against such teams like Khimki, Munich and Panevezys."

"It’s good that we won. Generally, we controlled all the game and should have won without any problems. At the same time Ulm started to change its defense, whereas we probably lost focus or just were tired. Coach told us about it in the locker room. There are two types of wins: either you win with a huge margin and don’t worry, or you have the nervous clutch like tonight with a couple of lucky moments for one team. I don’t remember if I scored so many [22] points in one quarter, probably not. The main thing is that I felt my scoring ability and the guys supplied me with assists and made good screens. I missed 2 important free throws in the end that I had to score. If I had, it would have been easier for my team."
BRAUN, TAYLOR

"I think we came out very flat to start games for three or four plays in a row. We could have done a better job from the beginning. But we fought at the end. I missed a free throw, Da Sean [Butler] missed a free throw and it turned to be the difference. We lost by 1 and it’s a tough pill to swallow. Now we have to play with pride in the last two EuroCup games and try to get two wins, because we definitely don’t want to go out winless. We have to be more focused and play with more energy in the start of the games. Hopefully, we’ll correct that and the games come out well. Shved is a very good player, many credentials to him. He did the best he could to hit tough shots. We didn’t play great defense against him. We should be focused on him all 40 minutes as he’s a great player."
