Ostend beats ASVEL, reaches Last 32

Telenet Ostend advanced to the Eurocup Last 32 in Group B by edging ASVEL Lyon Villeurbanne 70-78 on the road on Wednesday. Ostend improved to 5-4 and mathematically made it to the next round while ASVEL dropped to 3-6 and has run out of chances to advance due to a tie-break lost against FoxTown Cantu, fourth at 4-5. John Prince led the winners with 18 points. Mateusz Ponitka added 15, Gregory Echenique got 12 while Jared Berggren had 10 for Ostend. Ahmad Nivins led ASVEL with 17 points. Edwin Jackson added 12 while Amara Sy and Alexander Chassang each had 10 for the hosts, which led 24-23 early in the second quarter. It didn't last long, as Ostend got a 34-38 lead at halftime and extended it to 49-57 late in the third quarter. Jackson and Sy allowed ASVEL to get as close as 60-63 but Dusan Djordjevic and an unstoppable Prince allowed Ostend to get a go-ahead road win.

Ponitka and Wes Wilkinson ignited a 1-8 run which Echenique capped with a layup. Nivins scored down low and David Lighty added a layup but Echenique kept Ostend ahead, 5-12. Echenique reached double digits with a dunk which Nivins matched with a layup for a 10-16 ASVEL deficit. Sy and Jackson allowed the hosts to tie the game, 19-19, after 10 minutes. Chassang followed a triple with a free throws to give ASVEL a 24-23 edge early in the second quarter. A three-pointer by Prince and a dunk by Berggren put Ostend back ahead, 25-28. Berggren led an 0-8 run which boosted the guests' lead to 28-36. Nivins and Sy allowed ASVEL to get closer, 34-38, at halftime. Sy kept pacing the hosts after the break and David Andersen hit consecutive jumpers and added a triple for a 45-43 ASVEL lead. Ponitka and Berggen fueled a 0-6 run that gave the guests some fresh air at 45-49. Berggen stayed on fire and got help from Ponitka and Prince to make it a double-digit game, 47-57. Free throws by Nivins kept ASVEL within 49-57 after 30 minutes. Chassang brought the hosts a bit closer, 54-59, early in the fourth quarter. Pierre Antoine Gillet struck from downtown but Jackson and Lighty stepped up, forcing the guests to call timeout, 60-63, with 4 minutes left. Dusan Djordejvic followed a jumper with a layup and a three-pointer by Prince sealed the outcome, 64-70, with 2 minutes left. ASVEL kept trying but Prince made sure to keep Ostend way ahead until the final buzzer.
