Deteri Mayes scored 27 points, including a pair of clutch free throws with 9.7 seconds remaining, to lead Swans Gmunden to a 74-79 road win at Hapoel Galil Elyon in both team's ULEB Cup debut. The Austrian champion will now hold a share of first place in Group E when it hosts Benetton Fribourg next week in its first home game. Struggling Galil will seek its first win when it visits Triumph Lyubertsy in Russia. Mayes and Peter Hutter scored all the points in a 0-10 first-quarter run as head coach Bob Gonnen's team took control early. Mike Campbell and Clif Brown were the hosts' go-to guys and managed to keep Galil in the picture for much of the game. However the Swans seemed to be the hungrier team throughout the evening, witch combined with Galil's poor defense paved the way for a sweet debut. Ian Boylan added 12 points for Gmunden, Hutter scored 11 and Andreas Helmigk 10. Brown paced Galil with 20, Campbell added 19, Yogev Ohayon had 12 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists and Gili Mossinson scored 11.

The Swans won the opening tip and an aggressive Hutter penetrated for the game's first basket. Hutter was joined by Mayes to build a 0-10 run as Gmunden took an early 4-14 lead. Brown and Campbell closed the gap to 23-27 after 10 minutes. Brown's jumper early in the second quarter gave Galil its first lead, but Mayes remained hot and the visitors regained the lead. Mossinson kept Galil in the picture and teenager Eran Asante's defense seemed to inspire the hosts, but Florian Schoninger's triple at the end of the second period sent Gmunden to the locker rooms with a 41-46 halftime lead. Ohayon took control of the Galil attack and Kejuan Johnson restored the hosts' lead from the free-throw line, but Mayes and Kevin Johnson soon put the Swans back on top by the end of the period, which ended with the visitors up 61-62. The pace dropped as the tension rose in the fourth quarter. Both teams were missing shots, but Mayes, who remained the go-to guy for Gmunden, managed to increase the visitors' lead to 65-72. Brown heated up for the hosts and Galil cut the deficit to 1 with a minute-and-a-half remaining. However Hutter's three-point play kept the Swans in the driver's seat. Brown answered with a triple and Mayes missed on the other end, but a clutch offensive rebound led to a pair of Mayes free throws that put the hosts up 74-77 with 9.7 seconds remaining. Campbell lost the ball on Galil's final possession, Boylan darted downcourt for a slam and the Swans celebrated their ULEB Cup debut with a victory.

KANETI, ELIOT
Hapoel Galil Elyon
"We've lost our confidence, and therefore things just aren't working. We're still in a situation of learning to play together, especially on defense. Our important players got tired. We're simply at a low point and excuses don't matter. We need to make a mental switch with a victory, that's the only thing that can bring our confidence back."
GONNEN, ROBERT
Swans Gmunden
"I was surprised. I though we'd run out of energy or players with fouls in the second half, but then I saw that Galil also ran out of energy. I'm happy we had the last breath. I'm glad people can see that my team plays good basketball. I told my players how important this game was for me. I wont say they played for me, but they gave their best. It was our best game this season. There will be plenty of celebrating on the way home."
