With 8 points, Uros Duvnjak highlighted an amazing 11-0 run for PAOK and Nikola Markovic’s free throws made it 21-4. Craft and Krisztian Wittmann, both from long distance, drew Szolnok Olaj within 24-12 at the end of the first quarter. Tepic posted a jumper to lead 34-21 with four minutes left in the second quarter, but the visiting team reacted strong by scoring 11 unanswered points – 8 of them by David Vojvoda, to get within 34-32. A three pointer by Georgios Dedas fixed the score at 37-32 for PAOK at halftime.

Vasileiadis extended the margin to 42-32 early after the intermission with a three, but the guests fueled by Milos Borisov and Akos Keller cut the margin to 42-39. Craft put Szolnok ahead on 45-46 with a deep three. The two teams exchanged leads with William Hatcher scoring with second left in the third quarter to make it 54-52 for PAOK. It was a back-and-forth fourth quarter with the guests leading 68-69, before 4 consecutive free throws by Vasileiadis gave the hosts their first win of the season.

PAOK Thessaloniki
“We knew the game was going to be very tough, because Szolnoki is a good team, with good scorers and a good inside game. We tried to play aggressive defense for most part of the game, although we had some problems with defensive rebounding due to trying to stop their shooters with constant switches in offense. Congratulations to my players for not stopping to fight till the end of the game. All the games in the group are going to be very tough and we need to try and get better in every game.”
ALEKSIC, DRAGAN
Szolnoki Olaj
“It was a very hard game that both teams fought to the end. Our big problem was with the very bad beginning, but we showed character and came back from a big deficit for the first time in the season, which is the only positive thing that I’m keeping from this game. At the end, the game was decided by one ball, we lacked concentration, while PAOK had all it took to win, they made their free throws, we missed our shots and we lost. Congratulations to PAOK, they played really hard, I hope we present ourselves readier in the coming games.”

Players

DUVNJAK, UROS
PAOK Thessaloniki
“Beginning the competition with a victory is really important and I want to congratulate my teammates for not giving up in any part of the game and reaching our goal, which was the victory. We knew the game would be tough like all beginnings, but we came through. The most important thing is that we remained in the game till the end, played aggressive defense and used the transition very well in the offense. I want to congratulate my teammates and the coaching staff for a successful beginning.”
NATYAZHKO, KYRYL
Szolnoki Olaj
“We saw a very tough fight for both teams. PAOK was luckier in the end and won the game. We came back after a very bad start and stayed in the game till the end, but we made some mistakes that cost us. I hope we are going to be ready for the next game.”
