Valencia routs Unicaja to win Group H

Undefeated Valencia Basket clinched first place in Group H and with it home-court advantage in the quarterfinals by routing fellow Spanish side Unicaja Malaga 86-62 on Wednesday night. Valencia improved to 4-0, while Unicaja dropped to 2-2 and second place in Group H. Valencia took control in the second quarter and broke the game open in the third en route to a big win. Fernando San Emeterio led a balanced attack with 19 points, Antoine Diot had 14 points and 4 steals in 13 minutes and Rafa Martinez netted 10 in victory. Alberto Diaz scored 11, and Kyle Fogg had 10 points for Unicaja in defeat.

Unicaja stormed out of the gate with five different players scoring the first five baskets, a run capped by a Adam Waczynski triple to make it 2-11. But San Emeterio and Diot scored the next 9 Valencia points and with a help from a Guillem Vives triple, the hosts went in front 16-14. Things were tied at 18-18 after 10 minutes, but Bojan Dubljevic and Romain Sato scored the first 7 points of the second quarter for Valencia. Back-to-back threes from Diaz helped Unicaja go in front again and Oliver Lafayette hit from long range to make it 32-34. But the hosts finished the quarter with a 10-0 run, capped by a Pierre Oriola’s three-point play and a Martinez three-pointer, giving the hosts a 42-34 edge at halftime. San Emeterio had a three-pointer and a three-point play, Luke Sikma added a triple and Diot a pair of baskets to help open a 64-43 cushion midway through third quarter. The hosts never looked back after that, and the margin continued to grow in the fourth, with Valencia leading by as many as 31 points, 86-55, before Unicaja cut the deficit in the final three minutes.

Head Coaches

MARTINEZ, PEDRO
Valencia Basket
"I’m very happy with our game, for the intensity with which we played, for the rhythm, for the defensive activity, because both the players who started as those who came off the bench did so with the mental click to help fast. We were able to run on the fast break and rebounded well, which is very important against a team like Unicaja. I am glad to beat an excellent team and seal our spot in the next round."
PLAZA, JOAN
Unicaja Malaga
"There was no game from very early. We have had a good start, but then we saw that we were overtaken. We wanted to play strong and challenge the passing lanes, but we were not successful."

Players

DUBLJEVIC, BOJAN
Valencia Basket
"We played a good game, proving that we are a solid team at home. I am satisfied that we advanced at home with a good defensive game against a very tough rival."
DIAZ, ALBERTO
Unicaja Malaga
"We played a good first half, with some mistakes, but a good performance. In the second half we didn't know how to overcome all our difficulties and Valencia Basket was clearly better."
