Trento beats Partizan, controls destiny

Dolomiti Energia Trento took a big step toward reaching the 7DAYS EuroCup Quarterfinals with an outstanding defensive showing in a 69-54 home victory over Partizan NIS Belgrade. JaCorey Williams tallied a team-high 16 points for Trento while Gary Browne had 13 points and Victor Sanders 10. Trento has won its last two games to move to 3-2 in the group. Partizan is still alive for the quarterfinals despite the loss with a 2-3 record. Rashawn Thomas tallied 17 points in the loss while Nikola Jankovic added 7 points and 10 rebounds.

Kelvin Martin started the game with a big dunk and Ognjen Jaramaz scored at the other end to put Partizan on the board. The guests took their first lead on a Thomas three-pointer, 4-5. Nemanja Dangubic drained a long ball and Josh Perkins and Dangubic hit back-to-back triples for a 12-18 lead. Toto Forray hit from deep, but Trento was down 15-19 after 10 minutes. Trento was able to execute on offense in the second quarter with Luke Maye scoring 4 points in an 8-0 run to move ahead 23-19. Partizan needed more than 5 minutes to finally score on a Thomas jumper. That got Partizan going a bit with Uros Trifunovic hitting a three-pointer and Jankovic giving the guests the lead 27-28. Williams scored at the other end and Trento led 29-28 at the break.

Marcus Paige’s triple opened the second half for Partizan but Browne answered from long range to start a 10-0 run over nearly 5 minutes, including a Martin triple to go up 39-31. Sanders added a three-pointer and Browne hit another triple as the margin grew to double digits 45-35. Jeremy Morgan added 4 points as the hosts closed the quarter on a 9-0 run to lead 54-36 after 30 minutes. Jaramaz stopped the Trento run to start the fourth with a three-pointer and Thomas and Paige added baskets in a 0-7 surge to pull within 54-43. Williams finally scored for Trento after more than 4 minutes. Browne followed with a layup and three-pointer and the hosts found themselves up 61-43 with less than 5 minutes to play. Thomas scored 5 straight points for Partizan, but the deficit was still 15 (63-48). Trento delivered a knockout spurt for good with 6 straight points.

Group still open

Nothing has been decided in Group F as Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar downed Boulogne Metropolitans 92. If Lokomotiv and Partizan win in the final round of action, all four teams would be even at 3-3 in the group. Partizan was still able to retain the tiebreaker advantage over Trento.

Pivotal performer

Gary Browne ran things optimally for Trento, collecting 13 points including hitting 3 of 6 three-pointers to go along with 7 assists and 3 steals.

Telling numbers

Defense was the name of the game and Trento held Partizan to just 38.9% shooting on two-pointers and 29.2% on threes. Trento committed only 1 turnover fewer than Partizan - 14-13 - but the home side turned those miscues into 21 points compared to 5 for Partizan.

Next games

Trento will finish off the Top 16 with a big game at Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar on Wednesday, March 10. Partizan will return home and host Boulogne Metropolitans 92 the same evening.

Head Coaches

MOLIN, EMANUELE
Dolomiti Energia Trento
“We are proud to get the win. We cannot forget the players that Partizan was missing because for sure we did not face the team that has the ambitions of reaching the top eight or the final of the EuroCup. It’s important that we got the win. We are happy with how we showed up tonight. And let’s see if we are capable of doing that in the future.”
FILIPOVSKI, SASO
Partizan NIS Belgrade
“Congratulations to Trento for the victory. We only had enough strength to play 20 minutes because they were so aggressive. We committed too many turnovers because of their toughness and aggressiveness. And that was the key. We couldn’t organize our game.”

“We needed this win. Emotionally, we did a pretty good job playing the same basketball that we played earlier in the year. We still have a chance, so we are looking forward to that.”
