De Colo leads CSKA past Bamberg

CSKA Moscow registered its fourth consecutive win in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season by topping Brose Bamberg 81-72 in the Russian capital on Friday. CSKA improved to 16-4 in the standings while Bamberg dropped to 7-13. Nando De Colo led the winners with 20 points, making 13 of 13 free throws. Sergio Rodriguez added 13 points while Cory Higgins had 12 for CSKA. Dorell Wright led Bamberg with 11, while Augustine Rubit, Maodo Lo and Leon Radosevic each had 10 for the guests. Nikos Zisis and Dorell Wright shined early, giving Bamberg a 5-9 lead. Wright got help from Rubit and Lo to keep Bamberg in charge, 18-19, after 10 minutes. Higgins and De Colo combined for 12 points in a 14-2 run which gave CSKA a double-digit lead, 34-23, but Zisis and Ricky Hickman got Bamberg within 39-30 at halftime. De Colo kept pacing CSKA after the break, getting help from Will Clyburn and Higgins to keep CSKA fully in charge, 55-46, at the end of the third quarter. Rodriguez and Vitaly Fridzon boosted the hosts' margin to 73-56, enough for CSKA to cruise to a well-deserved win.

Zisis got Bamberg going with a floater and Wright added a three-pointer for a 0-5 lead. Semen Antonov downed a jumper and Sergio Rodriguez struck from downtown but Wright and Zizis kept the guests in charge, 5-9. De Colo followed a triple with free throws and a red hot Antonov added a jumper, a bomb from downtown and a backdoor basket for a 17-13 CSKA lead. Wright and Mado Lo each hit one from beyond the arc, though, as Bamberg regained a lead, 18-19, after 10 minutes. Othello Hunter and Higgins fueled a 7-0 run that sent CSKA in front 27-21 early in the second quarter. Leon Radosevic scored inside for the visitors, but De Colo followed foul shots with a layup to make Bamberg call timeout at 31-23. De Colo and Rodriguez hit free throws and Hunter added an alley-oop slam for a 12-point CSKA margin, 39-27. A free throw by Dejan Musli and a jumper by Hickman kept Bamberg within 39-30 at halftime.

Hickman struck from downtown right after the break but De Colo fed Hunter for a dunk, found Nikita Kurbanov for a layup and hit free throws to restore a 45-33 CSKA advantage. Patrick Heckmann dunked and Wright added a wild three-point play but an outstanding Clyburn kept CSKA way ahead, 52-40. Zisis and Rubit filled a 0-6 Bamberg run before a three-pointer by Higgins fixed the score at 55-46 after 30 minutes Rodriguez followed a jumper with a triple in a 7-0 run that Higgins capped with a dunk for a 64-48 CSKA lead with more 7 minutes left. Rubit and Radosevic tried to change things for Bamberg but Fridzon followed a triple with a jumper to seal the outcome, 73-56, with 4 minutes remaining, as CSKA kept full control until the final buzzer.

Both teams return to Turkish Airlines EuroLeague action next week - CSKA hosts Real Madrid on Thursday and Bamberg welcomes Panathinaikos Superfoods Athens on Friday.

"Congratulations to the team for another win. It is important to collect wins in this marathon. Obviously, it was not one of our best games but we played seriously and were ahead. We had a sloppy start at the beginning and after that, we managed to control the tempo and reduce their creativity. Therefore, keeping them to 11 points in the second quarter was a key. We forced a lot of turnovers against a team that is not turning the ball over that often - I think they had 16. Overall, it was a win we needed and as I said, it was not our best performance, especially on offense. We could do better but had our moments. We were up 18, 68-50, if I am not mistaken, but a win is a win. We are going to sit down and see what was good, what was bad and work on it. So, congratulations to the team. It is not about saving energy; the game against Real Madrid is six days from now. We want to go out there and play seriously in front of our fans. I want to say thank you, 7,000 fans came over here to applaud and see the team. We cannot expect to always have a brilliant performance, but it was enough to control the game from the beginning, playing seriously to get the win."

“We came here to compete, we wanted to stay in the game, to fight on both ends. We had some issues in previous games, injury problems so we wanted to make a step of improvement. Defensively we did a good job. We had bad execution offensively, we lost our rhythm, lost our concentration in the beginning of fourth quarter. We also gave to the opponent many cheap free throws during the game. So in the end the game was not as close as we would like it to be. We tried but we couldn’t make it. We also had problem with Daniel [Hackett]; we still have to see how severe his injury is. We have to fight through injury problems that we have in this tough schedule.”

"I think the game was good. Like Coach said, we didn't start too good but then we got back into our rhythm. We started playing defense, then we stepped it up a little bit more, just playing more aggressive, playing our game. Defensively, I feel like I have to come out and play more defense. If we play good defense, that sparks our offense, and if we run, these guys, Nando and Sergio, they are going to look for you. I just have to run the floor and try to make those baskets."
DE COLO, NANDO

"Brose Bamberg has a good team and will never give up. If we remember the first game, when they came back after a tough first half, they played really strong and that is what they did tonight, too. It doesn't matter how the game was, they always play hard, so it is a good win for us tonight. Every game is a like a final and we need to play hard in every game. We played a good game tonight."
