EA7 Milan rallies from 25 down to stun Darussafaka

EA7 Emporio Armani Milan conjured an astonishing comeback to come back from a 25-point deficit and stun Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul with a wild 89-87 victory at Mediolanum Forum. Midway through the third quarter, the visitors led 43-68 and seemed certain to end a two-game losing streak, but then Davide Pascolo and Krunoslav Simon inspired an amazing recovery from a Milan team that looked dead on its feet. Milan won the final 15 minutes 46-19 to complete a season sweep over Darussafaka, improving to 7-14 in the standings, while Darussafaka dropped to 10-11 and hanging onto a place in the top half of the standings by a thread. Pascolo and Simon led the home team’s scorers with 15 points apiece, while Milan Macvan and Rakim Sanders both added 10. The game’s three top scorers all came from Darussafaka: Brad Wanamaker tallied 20 points and 6 assists, Dairis Bertans scored 18 and Ante Zizic had 17 points and 8 rebounds.

Milan raced out to a 5-0 lead, but Darussafaka soon bounced back behind the playmaking of Wanamaker and the scoring of a dominant Zizic, who netted 6 early points as his team went up 12-17. Ricky Hickman answered with 7 points in a hurry as Milan kept it close, 20-24, at the end of the first, but Darussafaka powered further ahead as a triple from Bertans and a layup from Wanamaker provided a double-digit lead, before Anderson made it 38-51 at halftime by beating the buzzer from downtown. Adrien Moerman sank back-to-back threes to start the second half and the lead just kept growing, reaching 25 with another triple from Bertans. The game looked well and truly over, but Pascolo sparked Milan back to life before consecutive triples from Kalnietis bridging the third and fourth quarters reduced the deficit to 64-73. Simon scored 8 points in a row to tie the score at 78-78 midway through the fourth, and free throws from Pascolo gave Milan its first lead since the fourth minute, 84-82 with 90 seconds to go. A put-back from Sanders made it 86-83 inside the final 30 seconds, and free throws were traded in the remaining time as Milan held on for a scarcely believable victory.

"It wasn't easy to turn things around after being so bad in the first 26 minutes. Our body language was bad, our communication, pick-and-roll defense, our effort. Nothing worked for us. Then something clicked, we played small, a lot of energy, we took great shots and we made most of them. It's a lesson we need to learn. We have to play like we did in the last 12 minutes, with that effort. Otherwise it's a shame. Pascolo turned a negative mismatch against Zizic in a positive one because of his intelligence. He's been great."

"Congratulations to Milan for a great comeback. But this is a very difficult loss for us. We had a good chance to win and we missed a big opportunity. The game was completely in our control and for 26 minutes we played beautiful basketball, but that’s obviously not enough and we didn’t maintain the same focus. We missed some shots and at money time you can’t afford to do that. For me this gym has a lot of ghosts…good ghosts and bad ghosts! I saw the good ghosts for 26 minutes, but when the bad ones came, they came hard."

"It was an incredible comeback. We had a great reaction when down by more than 20 points. It was mental effort but it took also a lot of energy. We didn't give up. It was emotional. It was awesome."
ARSLAN, ENDER
Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul
"That’s a quite unbelievable result. We played very well during 25 minutes and we kept the control of the game. Then we suddenly lost our rhythm. We had a sudden and inexplicable sort of stop. That’s was quite an unusual comeback. This is a really tough loss. We quickly need to recover and get a couple of wins in order to keep our playoff chances alive."
