Lokomotiv rallies to beat Murcia on the road

In the final Top 16 game that did not have any implications on the final Group E standings first-place Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar rallied from a 14-point deficit to beat UCAM Murcia on the road 77-85 on Wednesday. Lokomotiv finished Top 16 with 5-1 record and in the quarterfinals will face a fellow Russian side Zenit St. Petersburg, while Murcia finished its EuroCup campaign with 1-5 Top 16 record. Mardy Collins led the winners with 20 points. Andrey Zubkov scored 10 of his 16 points in second quarter. Taylor Rochestie had 14, and Matt Janning netted 12 points in victory. Billy Baron paced Murcia with 21 points, Nemanja Radovic had 17 and Jose Angel Antelo 13 in defeat.

Three three-pointers, one each from Sadiel Rojas, Antelo and Baron opened 19-11 in the first quarter. After Rochestie helped Lokomotiv cut it to 21-17 after 10 minutes, Baron’s basket, including his second three-pointer helped open 35-21 midway through the second. However Zubkov fueled a big visitors’ run, scoring 10 points in the second stanza, and Janning capped a 3-19 run with a three-pointer that gave Lokomotiv 38-40 at halftime. Teams traded leads in the third quarter before another Janning’s three-pointer sparked a 0-9 run that made it 56-65 with 2 minutes left in the third. Radovic helped Murcia cut the deficit, but Ryan Broekhoff hit a triple early in the fourth to keep the visitors with some breathing room. Murcia got within 3 points twice in the fourth quarter, but Lokomotiv scored on three consecutive trips down the floor through Zubkov and Collins, to make it 71-80, sealing the deal.

"The team has improved a lot compared from the last game we played here. We tried hard, not all the time, but it is not easy to do it, be focused and play with high intensity at both ends. Still, we had troubles against their zone defense, which stopped our offense. We could have taken better decisions and we reached halftime trailing by 2 points. We had a good start after the break, but they were really accurate on offense, hitting 4 consecutive three-point shots with players that are not pure shooters like [Mardy] Collins, for instance. We knew Lokomotiv is a talented team and we had trouble playing defense on [Taylor] Rochestie in direct screens, but the team fought until the final second looking for chances to win the game. We have to keep working in this direction. Lokomotiv is a deep, experienced team and this game was a good game for us to bounce back and feel better."

"Before the game we knew that we were going to be first in the group and nothing would change in calculations for later on. So we were sloppy in the beginning, especially in the first quarter, when Murcia played great basketball and hurt us a lot. We didn’t have a big reaction. Changing defense maybe disturbed them and helped us find our rhythm in offense. We deserved to win and are looking forward to the quarterfinals. "
