Paris Levallois beats French rival Strasbourg to clinch third place

Paris Levallois beat Strasbourg 71-75 on Tuesday to clinch third place in Group A. Blake Schilb scored 23 points on 4-of-6 three-point shooting to lad Paris, which improved to 5-5. The loss dropped Strasbourg to 8-2; both of its loses came against Paris. Landing Sane added 13 points and 8 rebounds and Louis Labeyrie scored 10 for the winners. After falling behind early, Strasbourg took charge with a 16-0 run that bridged the first and second quarters to lead 22-9. Paris came back to get within 1 and trailed just 33-30 at halftime. Paris grabbed the lead in the second half and Nicolas Lang and Schilb hit back-to-back threes for a commanding 49-58 Paris lead late in the third quarter. Strasbourg came back to within 3 in the closing minutes, but Paris made its free throws in the final minute to ice the win. Ali Traore led Strasbourg with 16 points, Matt Howard added 13 points, Antoine Diot 11 and Louis Campbell 10.

Sharrod Ford scored for Paris on the game’s first possession as the teams traded baskets early on. Schilb scored twice and Labeyrie drilled a three to put the visitors up 6-9. Howard went to work inside with a slam, a trip to the foul line and an assist to Anthony Dobbins for a layup. Diot scored on the break to cap a 9-0 run to finish the quarter for a 15-9 lead. Traore scored twice sandwiched around a Diot three as the run extended to 16 unanswered points and Strasbourg went ahead 22-9. Sane’s tip-in ended an eight-minute scoreless stretch for Paris. Schilb and Ford helped revive the Paris attack. A pair of Schilb threes made it 27-21. Sane sank a triple and Micheal Jean-Baptiste-Adolphe scored on the break to close the gap to 29-28. Traore’s free throws and mid-range jumper helped Strasbourg keep a 33-30 lead at halftime.

Mike Green’s three-point play put Paris in front early in the second half. The score was tied twice before Maleye Ndoye and Ford pushed the visitors ahead 37-41. Bangaly Fofana’s slam tied it again at 44-44. Sane heated up to lead Paris to a 5-point edge. Dobbins sank free throws before Nicolas Lang and Schilb hit back-to-back threes for a commanding 49-58 Paris lead. Traore scored twice to get within 53-58 through three quarters. The difference remained in the 5-7 points range until Schilb scored 5 points midway through the quarter to make it 58-69. A Campbell triple gave Strasbourg hope. Howard scored inside and Jeremy Leloup mad a three to make it 66-71. Diot made it a one-shot game entering the final minute. After Schilb grabbed his own offensive rebound, he split free throws to make it 68-72. Howard free throws made it 71-73, but Green iced the game from the line.

"After leading by 11 points in the first half, we blew the lead to finish only 3 points ahead. They made big shots during the third quarter. They led, we panicked and lost our concentration… At the end we got back in the game because we found our outside/ inside game, but it was too late. We need to draw lessons for the second phase. Fortunately the result does not change anything and we finish first."

"The goal was to play and rotate the players tonight. Our first quarter was not good, but fortunately we played better in the other three quarters. It was a no-pressure situation. This game allows us to reassure ourselves about what we can do for the rest of our season. There are things to improve offensively and defensively, but the will of the players is better. This shows that we learn from our mistakes."
