Cedevita makes a winning EuroCup exit

In a game that did not matter much in the final standings, Cedevita Zagreb finished its 7DAYS EuroCup campaign on a winning note by downing previously-qualified Unicaja Malaga 74-71 in the Croatian capital on Wednesday. Unicaja knew it would finish second in Group H regardless of the outcome of this game, and will next face FC Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals. Cedevita finished Group H with 2-4 record. Marko Arapovic scored 14 points to pace Cedevita, Dzanan Musa scored all 12 of his points in the first half and grabbed 7 rebounds, while Toni Katic and John Shurna chipped in with 11 point apiece. Dejan Musli collected 18 points and 7 rebounds for Unicaja, Nemanja Nedovic had 12 points and Kyle Fogg netted 10 in defeat.

Five different scorers helped Cedevita to a 12-9 lead early on before back-to-back triples from Fogg and Jamar Smith helped Unicaja to an 18-19 lead after 10 minutes. A three-pointer from Arapovic gave Cedevita 25-21 early in the second, but triples from Nedovic and Alberto Diaz got Unicaja back in front, 31-33. Musli dominated inside for the visitors, but Musa hit a pair of three-pointers for Cedevita, which led 42-41 at halftime. A 10-0 run to open the third quarter, with Arapovic and Katic in main roles, had Cedevtia up 52-41, but Unicaja replied, and with 6 points from Musli came within 55-53. In his EuroCup debut, Roko Rogic scored to end the third quarter and open the fourth at 59-53. Fogg and Katic traded triples and the latter fed Shurna for a basket that opened a 66-59 advantage with four minutes left. Fogg, Nedovic and Alen Omic got Unicaja within a single possession, but a basket by Tomas sealed the victory for the hosts.

Head Coaches

MRSIC, VELJKO
Cedevita Zagreb
"We played well and we were much more focused today. This game showed that it is important how much you want to win. We played without some players, but we wanted to win this game more than them. We shot poorly from the three-point line, but we finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds and we deserved to win."
PLAZA, JOAN
Unicaja Malaga
"We probably lost this game before it started. Cedevita played without three players, but their other players stepped up. We committed 13 turnovers and Cedevita outrebounded us. My players missed many easy shots. It is not usual for my teams to underestimate other teams, but that is what happened tonight."

Players

MUSA, DZANAN
Cedevita Zagreb
"We played without Babic, Boatright and James, but we showed that we are a good team and we managed to get a win. The coach told me that I will play in this game and I think I used my time on the court well."
MUSLI, DEJAN
Unicaja Malaga
"Cedevita deserved to win this game. We allowed too many offensive rebounds, but it wouldn’t be undeserved if we managed to win this game. Now we have to focus on our next game."
