Union Olimpija Ljubljana tipped off the Torneig de Básquet Júnior “Ciutat de L’Hospitalet” with a strong victory as five players scored in double figures in a 73-62 win over tourney hosts CB L’Hospitalet. In the Group A showdown, Vasilje Vucetic led the way with 15 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks while Aleksandar Lazic added 15 points, Blaz Mesicek had 14 and Jules Akodo and Vlatko Cancar both chipped in 12. L’Hospitalet was paced by 18 points from Xabier Gomez while Roger Renau had 15 and Andreu Nicolau added 14. Olimpija jumped ahead 9-17 with a 2-9 run in the first quarter before the host side went on a 10-0 surge spanning the quarters to go ahead 19-17. An 0-11 Union push opened a 22-33 advantage and Mesicek made it 24-36 with a three-ball. At intermission, Olimpija was up 27-37. L’Hospitalet cut the deficit to eight points to start the second half but Olimpija increased it to 14 points – which was also the cushion after three quarters 48-62. The teams combined for just three points in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. L’Hospitalet eventually trimmed the gap to 59-67 with two minutes left before Cancar nailed back-to-back three-pointers to finish the game.
