Dyson, Jerusalem overpower Gran Canaria in opener

Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem was too strong for Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas in Game 1 of their best-of-three 7DAYS EuroCup Quarterfinals opener and dominated the second half for an 87-67 victory at Pais Arena Jerusalem in the Israeli capital. Jerome Dyson starred with 20 points and 6 assists for the winners, who now must travel to the Canary Islands for Game 2 on Friday. Amar’e Stoudemire and Tarence Kinsey added 14 points apiece, Brian Randle scored 10 and Travis Peterson amassed 7 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks. Jerusalem outrebounded Gran Canaria 35-29, dished 25 assists to the visitors’ 15 and blocked 7 shots in the win. Bo McCalebb scored 12 and Kyle Kuric 10 for Gran Canaria, which struggled with its typically great three-point shooting, making only 6 of 27 tries (22.2%).

Peterson got the hosts going with a defensive rebound on one end and a triple at the other, but Gran Canaria stormed in front as McCalebb each scored and delivered assists in a 0-7 run to make it 7-9. McCalebb’s next basket pushed the visitors’ advantage to 5. Stoudemire scored twice in a 6-0 Jerusalem run to regain the lead. Gran Canaria scored the next two buckets in the paint before a Randle layup in the closing seconds of the first quarter made it 16-17. Pablo Aguilar scored twice for Gran Canaria early in the second quarter, but Curtis Jerrells’s nailed his first three as Jerusalem surged ahead with a 9-0 run to lead 26-21. Dyson took over with a layup in traffic and another on the break to give the hosts a double-digit lead, 34-24. Eulis Baez took charge with 7 points in a 0-11 Gran Canaria run that gave the visitors the lead. Kinsey beat the halftime buzzer to give the hosts a 39-38 edge at the break. Sasu Salin tied the score at 41-41 early in the second half, but Dyson took charge with 3 three-pointers in a 13-2 charge as the hosts assumed control. Veteran Albert Oliver got Gran Canaria going again with 5 straight points. While Kuric looked to heat up for Gran Canaria, Dyson turned distributor with assists on threes by Jerrells and Yotam Halperin for a 62-53 Jerusalem lead. Kinsey beat the buzzer again with a jumper that ended the third quarter at 64-57. Randle made an impact with a block and layup followed by a basket-plus-foul in the ensuing possession to make it 73-62. Kinsey added a triple and the lead ballooned to 18 on a Peterson put-back as the hosts cruised to a crucial Game 1 victory.

Hapoel Bank Yahav Jerusalem
"We are happy because at a minimum we will play another EuroCup game at home in front of our fantastic fans. This game was very tactical and many situations changed for both teams. Now we go to Gran Canaria to play in another tough arena and we need to be ready and make the right adjustments."
CASIMIRO, LUIS
Herbalife Gran Canaria Las Palmas
"There was a big difference between the two halves. In the first half we played okay, no weak spots in offense or defense, but in the second half we played very bad on defense and allowed many easy baskets. We were bad on three-point shooting and in rebounding… Hapoel Jerusalem played very physical and that was a problem for us. "
