CSKA's offense is too much for Zvezda's D

The Turkish Airlines EuroLeague's best offense dominated the best defense as CSKA Moscow rolled over Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade 102-80 in the Game of the Week for Round 22 on Thursday. CSKA raised its record to 16-6 and holds onto second place while Zvezda fell to 12-10, failing to separate itself a bit from the playoff-chasing crowd. Reigning MVP Nando De Colo led the CSKA onslaught with 25 points and 6 assists, while Nikita Kurbanov scored 18 without a miss and Milos Teodosic returned from three games out due to injury to score 16 points. Zvezda got 16 points and a career-high 9 assists from Luka Mitrovic. Charles Jenkins added 12 points, while Ongjen Kuzmic and Marko Simonovic had 10 apiece. CSKA made its first 7 three-pointers on the way to a 58-46 halftime lead, which proved too much momentum even against the league-leading Zvezda defense, which had allowed just 73.3 points on average in the seasons' first 21 games.

Kuzmic scored twice inside before Kurbanov got CSKA going with an open triple, but Mitrovic and Nate Wolters soon put Zvezda up 3-8. With a pair of shots from the arc, Semen Antonov single-handedly pulled CSKA back to tie 9-9 before De Colo hit his first from deep and got fouled to make it a four-point play and a 13-11 CSKA lead. Colo scored then on a three-point play that Branko Lazic answered with one shot for a 16-16 tie. Teodosic returned after three games with a back-door assist to De Colo. Kuzmic couldn't be stopped with his fourth basked already inside, but couldn't stop Kyle Hines, either. De Colo's layup was matched by free throws from Marko Guduric but Corey Higgins and Andrey Vorontsevich joined CSKA's three-point parade to make it 31-24. Teodosic bridged the first and second quarters with 5 free throws as the lead reached 36-26. Deon Thompson's first basket and his block leading to a Jenkins jumper got Zvezda closer. Vorontsevich came back to hit CSKA's eighth three-pointer as the lead climbed to 41-32. Ognjen Dobric scored 5 points and Wolters added a basket as Zvezda pulled within 44-39, but soon De Colo took over again with a three-point play and a layup as CSKA zoomed to a 51-39 lead. Kuzmic, Kurbanov and Jenkins exchanged baskets before Mitrovic turned a loose ball into a three-point play at 53-46. But Teodosic returned with a triple and Kurbanov finished the half at the free throw line as CSKA led by an incredible 58-46.

The CSKA lead hit a new high of 62-49 after halftime before Simonovic took over. He started with a layup and free throws to get the difference back to single digits, then dialed up a triple to suddenly make it 62-56. De Colo answered from downtown and then drove strong to make it 67-56. Kurbanov and Milko Bjelica exchanged free throws on the way to 71-59 before Antonov buried his third three-pointer and Teodosic his second as CSKA's lead kept climbing to 77-64 after 30 minutes. Bjelica opened the fourth quarter with a triple but Teodosic answered with a layup and soon connected with De Colo on a back-door layup at 83-67. From there it was a question of CSKA avoiding a relapse and risking a tie-break problem by letting the difference fall below the 11 points that Zvezda won by in their first game in Belgrade. There was no such danger as Victor Khryapa joined the fun and CSKA passed the century mark on the way to an outstanding victory.

"It's one more win. Thank you to the 9,000-plus fans who came to the game. It was important to my players to have that support. I think we were the better team overall. We also managed to play better defense. Despite the fact that we gave up 80 points, I think our defense was pretty good in the second half. The only thing that I would say is the 20 turnovers, which sometimes because of our wish to play faster, we didn't read some situations. But overall the 27 assists says how my team wants to play: team basketball, sharing the ball and involving everybody. It's good to have Milos and Nando back and practicing continuously, so they can get back into their shape. Players are not robots. They come and go with injuries and it's a process of getting back. It's fun to have them together, and some other players, like Nikita Kurbanov, who played consistently well offensively and defensively, so I want to congratulate him. Semen Antonov had a great start and defensively gave us a lot. The lineup that played at the end, with Victor Khryapa, who comes off the bench to give us good defense, is something to mention, also with Vitaly Fridzon and all the team coming off the bench."

"Congratulations to CSKA for the win. They played very well, offense and defense. At the start of the game, they played excellent offense. In the first quarter, they missed one three-point shot after making seven in a row. They had an advantage and continued to play very good. In the second half, I think they controlled the game. They played solid offense against our best defense in the EuroLeague, and that was it."

KURBANOV, NIKITA
CSKA Moscow
"We lost our advantage in the first quarters because of turnovers but soon we came back to the game thank to good percentage on three-pointers and defense. We got to a 10-point margin and it gave us confidence; we decided not to stop. The team was fully concentrated till the last seconds."
ANTONOV, SEMEN
CSKA Moscow
"It's great that we won today. We showed a good game for the whole 40 minutes. In the second half we made our defense more aggressive. It helped us to create a good margin. We lost to Crvena Zvezda on the road, so we knew it's a great team. We treated our opponent with respect. The final score is clear. All the guys did a great job. I congratulate all the Army Men with this victory. Thanks to all the fans for coming to support us at this late hour despite the fact that many people have to go at work in the morning. It was a pleasure to play for all of them."
DE COLO, NANDO
CSKA Moscow
"It was a tough game. We know that Zvezda has a great team and they play really aggressive. But the most important thing is that we respect what we wanted to do on defense. We played really aggressive, and even if we turned the ball over too much, we played defense and this is why we won tonight. It's always a pleasure to play with Milos(Teodosic). He's a smart player who knows the game and we know how we can play together. We have a good team with great guys, but you need to show it on the court. And this is what the coach wants. We know exactly what we need to do, each player knows his role on the team, but we need to play together."
