Unicaja beats Bayern in Munich to advance to semifinals

Unicaja Malaga will play in the 7DAYS EuroCup semifinals in its first season in the competition after holding off a late FC Bayern Munich charge to win 69-74 in the deciding game of their best-of-three series on Wednesday at Audi Dome. Unicaja, which dropped the opener in Munich before taking the last two games, will face Lokomotiv Kuban Krasnodar in the semifinals. Nemanja Nedovic led the winners with 21 points and 4 assists, Dejan Musli added 16 points and drew 9 fouls and Kyle Fogg added 12 points. Unicaja outrebounded the competition’s top rebounding team 31-32 and held Bayern’s top two scorers, Devin Booker and Nick Johnson, to a combined 4 points on 2 of 10 shooting. Bayern made only 5 of 23 three-pointers (21.7%). Reggie Redding paced the Bayern attack with 15 points, Vladimir Lucic scored 13, Bryce Taylor added 11, Anton Gavel 10 and Maxi Kleber posted 9 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks in defeat.

Neither team scored on its opening two possessions until a Jeff Brooks steal led to an Alberto Diaz layup for the visitors. Kleber kept Bayern in it by scoring the hosts first points and later starring at both ends with a fine block of Diaz and an assist to Gavel. Musli scored three straight baskets to extend the Unicaja margin to 6-15. Lucic free throws ended a three-minute scoring drought for Bayern and Maik Zirbes added points from the line, but a Fogg jumper on the first-quarter buzzer made it 10-17. Adam Waczynski nailed a three to open the second quarter and give Unicaja a double-digit lead, however Redding bettered him with a four-point play at the other end. Bayern trimmed the gap to 4, but Nedovic answered. However Bayern continued to fight back and Lucic buried a three to cap a 7-0 run and give Bayern its first lead, 25-24, midway through the second quarter. However Waczynski answered with a triple on the ensuing possession as Unicaja regained the lead and finished the half on a 2-10 tear to lead 27-34 at the break.

Kleber opened the second half with a three-pointer, but Fogg kept the visitors on top. Devn Booker scored twice on second-chance opportunities before Gavel completed the comeback with a layup that made it 42-41. After a Unicaja timeout, Nedovic carved up the Bayern defense for a layup and Fogg and Waczynski knocked down threes to make it 44-49. Fogg scored again as Unicaja finished the third quarter on a 2-11 tear to lead 44-52. Nedovic extended the Unicaja advantage to 9 with a three early in the fourth quarter. Nihad Djedovic buried a three to make it a 6-point game, but Unicaja remained comfortably in control. Fogg was called for an unsportsmanlike foul on Redding, who scored the next 4 points to make it 57-62 with five minutes remaining. At the other end, Jamar Smith drilled a pull-up jumper and a three for his first 5 points of the game to put the visitors up by 10 with 3:40 to play. Taylor and Lucic continued to fight for Bayern, but the hosts’ woeful three-point shooting continued. Nonetheless, Redding made a pair of free throws with 1:07 remaining to make it 66-69. However Musli split free throws to make it a two-possession game and Bayern missed its next three shots before Carlos Suarez iced the game from the line.

DJORDJEVIC, SASA
FC Bayern Munich
"They are a Euroleague team. They know how to acclimate and play in this kind of playoff. We had offensive problems in the first half. We tried to force some rhythm that wasn’t there. In the end the game was what these games are, pick-and-roll, middle pick-and-roll, pick-and-roll, middle pick-and-roll, guards, guards, guards. We couldn’t stop their pick-and-roll and their creation and those quick feet and the ball handling and those penetrations led to kicks. They are good ball handling team, they had three point guards out on the floor, two for sure, and controlled the game. It was the creation of the guards that destroyed our defense. "
PLAZA, JOAN
Unicaja Malaga
"I think that we are learning and growing during the playoffs, and even the regular season. It’s true that we still made some mistakes. When we had the game in our hands, we took some risky shots. We almost disappeared in some moments. But I think that the team showed today that it is more mature. I am really happy for my players and my staff; they work a lot to try to arrive here. I know that our fans are happy. We are going to try to get to the final. In every moment of the game, even when Bayern led by 1 or 2 points, we kept calm. We stayed focused on what we have to do. We didn’t take crazy shots. We didn’t have the 20 turnovers that we had last week, for example. Little by little we deserved to win. We are really happy for the people in Malaga and the club. "

Players

LUCIC, VLADIMIR
FC Bayern Munich
"They were the better team today. From the first minute they were leading practically the entire game. It looked like we were too nervous. Tough loss. I don’t know. We need to bounce back; we still have the German championship. "
NEDOVIC, NEMANJA
Unicaja Malaga
"We came here; we showed up today. We knew it was going to be a tough fight because Bayern is a tough team, but we wanted to win this game. We had our motivation because they beat us three times before this season and we got our win. We are going to the semifinals. "
