Llull stars in Madrid rout of Darussafaka

Real Madrid never trailed and used its season-highs of 16 three-pointers and 28 assists to register its ninth consecutive win, beating Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul 101-83 on Friday night at the Spanish capital. Madrid improved to league-best 18-5 record, while Darussafaka dropped to 11-12 and ninth place in the standings. Sergio Llull scored 19 of his 26 points in the first quarter, including 5 three-pointers in that period, as the hosts opened an 18-point lead and never looked back. Llull also had 8 assists, while Othello Hunter and Trey Thompkins scored 14 apiece. Anthony Randolph added 13 points in victory. James Anderson netted 18 for Darussafaka, Brad Wanamaker scored 15, while Ante Zizic amassed 11 points plus 10 rebounds in defeat.

Madrid took the lead through Jonas Maciulis and Randolph scoring inside, before Llull hit 4 three-pointers in 2 minutes and 8 seconds to open an 18-8 lead. Anderson scored for the visitors, but not before Thompkins nailed his first three-pointer, and Llull scored a pair by driving to the basket, and hitting his fifth from long distance that helped make it 30-12. Darussafaka saw Scottie Wilbekin score at the end of first, and Adrien Moerman hit a triple early in the second quarter. A pair of three-point plays by Hunter kept Madrid in front 36-19. The visitors replied with a 0-9 run during which Dairis Bertans scored 7 points, and cut the lead into single digits, but Hunter's put-back dunk and Fernandez's three-point dagger stopped Darussafaka's momentum, before a corner three from Jaycee Carroll and another triple from Fernandez opened a 51-32 margin. Wilbekin hit from long range to make it 53-37 at halftime. Randolph with a three, and Llull with a tough baseline jumper broke the 20-point margin in the opening minute of the second half. Darussafaka suddenly started hitting shots and made 4 consecutive three-pointers in less than two minutes, including 2 from Anderson, and got within 69-60. Madrid restored a double-digit margin with dunks from Hunter and Randloph to make it 75-60 at the end of third, and the lead was extended to 81-61 early in the fourth. Consecutive three-pointers from Luke Harangody, Wanamaker and Anderson got Darussafaka within 93-83, but never closer than that as Madrid closed the game out with impossible shot-clock beating triples from Luka Doncic and Llull.

"First congratulations to the guys for the win. We certainly set the pace in the beginning of the match… I think the first quarter was the key, we got the advantage playing very solid on defense, getting good shots and moving the ball well. It is always dangerous because they are a team that can shoot three-pointers, they are very good in one on one situations. We got some moments in the second half when it was hard to contest that. But everybody played with good effort, and we finally got a victory… I was not surprised with our good start to the game. We have a mature team and we dealt with a possible hangover [from wining the Spanish Cup] quite well. The game was a demanding one, and we rotated more players. I expected Llull and Fernandez all to play less than 20 minutes, and all did quite a good job. "
BLATT, DAVID
Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul
"Congratulations to Real Madrid. Obviously, when a team shoots the ball as well as they did, it is difficult to win, particular against such top quality team at home. We did not defend well in the first quarter, and put ourselves in a very deep hole. After that the game was even for three quarters, despite the fact they shot the ball so well. But we chased that the whole game and never gave ourselves a good chance to win. Llull was terrific, that is not first time in his career that he’s been great, but certainly tonight he had a special night. You can trap the ball out of his hands, but the way the rest of the guys were shooting, that would have been the problem, too. When you play a team that is that hot and that talented, it is going to be tough to win. There is no two ways about it. They shot the lights out, and I am sure Coach Laso will tell you the same thing. "

“It’s been a good day. The important thing is we started out strong, because when you play after winning a trophy it can trip you up if you relax too much. But we were very serious and intense from the start. The truth is I don’t remember having another first quarter like that. It was one of those days where everything worked from the start and that gives you confidence.”
ANDERSON, JAMES
Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul
"We put ourselves in a deep hole in the first quarter. And we tried to get a comeback during the next three quarters. We fought back as a team, but it’s hard to catch them back when you play such a tough road game."
