Shengelia leads Baskonia past Khimki

Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz rallied from an early double-digit deficit to beat Khimki Moscow Region 87-77 at Fernando Buesa Arena on Thursday. Baskonia improved to 11-13 in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season standings, just one win behind from eighth-ranked Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv, while Khimki slipped to 14-10. Rodrigue Beaubois led the winners with 16 points, Toko Shengelia tallied 15 points and 15 rebounds and Marcelinho Huertas scored 13 points for Baskonia. Alexey Shved paced Khimki with 23 points, Anthony Gill added 21 and Tyler Honeycutt had 11 for the visitors. Gill and Shved combined for 18 of Khimki's first 21 points and a driving layup by Marko Todorovic gave the guests a 14-point margin late in the first quarter. Baskonia bounced back with a 10-0 run en route to a 44-39 halftime lead. Shengelia kept pushing Baskonia after the break and got help from Janis Timma and Vincent Poirier to break the game open. Baskonia outrebounded Khimki 42-30 in one of the keys to the game.

Gill got Khimki going with a layup-plus-foul and Stefan Markovic soon added a triple for a 2-6 Khimki lead. Huertas answered from downtown, but Shved scored in penetration, fed Gill for an outstanding alley-oop slam and hit a three-pointer to boost Khimki's lead to 5-14. Gill scored again and a red-hot Shved added a deep three-pointer that made it a double-digit game, 9-21. Huertas insisted from beyond the arc, but Charles Jenkins and Todorovic extended the guests' margin to 12-26. Back-to-back triples by Luca Vildoza and Matt Janning brought Baskonia within 18-26 after 10 minutes. Shengelia scored down low and fed Johannes Voigtmann for a backdoor layup that got the hosts within 22-26 after a 10-0 run. Sergey Monya and Honeycutt each buried a triple, but Baskonia found a new go-to guy in Beaubois, who had 8 quick points to bring the hosts back to life. A three-pointer by Patricio Garino tied the game at 34-34. Thomas Robinson stepped up with a put-back layup and Honeycutt nailed one from beyond the arc, but Diop and an outstanding Shengelia completed Baskonia's comeback at 44-39 at halftime.

Shved hit free throws immediately after the break, but a put-back layup by Vincent Poirier ignited a 9-0 run in which Timma and Shengelia combined for 7 points to make it a double-digit game, 53-41. Beaubois hit a triple, Timma scored again and free throws by Poirier broke the game open at 60-43. Honeycutt struck from downtown, but so did Janning and Voigtmann. Gill kept Khimki within 69-52 after 30 minutes. Honeycutt hit a jumper and Gill followed a layup with a three-pointer to give Khimki hope at 69-59 early in the fourth quarter. Beaubois rescued Baskonia with a driving layup and a triple. Free throws by Shengelia and Huertas seemed to seal the outcome at 78-61 with over four minutes left. By the time Shved found his first basket since the first quarter it was already too little, too late for Khimki, as Baskonia was well on its way to a big home win.

"First of all, I am very happy because I believe it was a good win, especially after the way we started the game. Khimki took the game to a very physical level and we struggled to rebound and come back on defense. They were dominating us, but we reacted very well, especially our bench players. We changed the game rhythm through defensive intensity. That allowed us to dominate the defensive rebounds and run. We played very well in the second and third quarters, even though we didn't have a good start in the fourth quarter, losing our rhythm. We played a little bit worse in the fourth quarter, but I give credit to the team for the way it bounced back and am very happy about it. We did it through intensity, which the way that, in my opinion, games must be won. A lot of players - Vildoza, Diop, Garino - gave us extra intensity, along with others who were on the court already. I believe that we shouldn't make many plans or calculations. We have to focus on the next game. If we lose in Valencia, who are playing really well at home, maybe Maccabi can win and everything will look tough. I hope we keep our chances alive when we play against Maccabi in Round 29. If we are alive by then, we can talk about calculations, but until then, we have to think of the next game only."

"Congratulations to Baskonia. They deserved to win. For us, the second and third quarters were really bad. We lost our concentration and went out from our game plan. We need to be patient and have good execution on offense, move the ball and find the open players. It is something that we did in the first quarter, and this is why we were leading. But for some reason, in the second and third quarters, we struggled and gave Baskonia the opportunity to play in transition, which is their game, and to shoot three-pointers with a lot of confidence. So the game was over. One more time, congratulations. We have to think about our next EuroLeague game, against Milan at home. We need to play as a team. Our qualification to the playoffs is not finished. We need to fight in every game and today, for two quarters, we didn't do it. The way we played, we deserved to lose."

"I think that the MVP was the team. We did a great team job, defensively and also offensively. Nothing else, one down and four more to go at home, two on the road. We are still alive and fighting for the playoffs. Of course, if anybody doesn't believe that we can make the playoffs, we wouldn't come to play. I think we all believe it and have enough resources to prove it."
