ASCO Slask Wroclaw used some tough defense to open their Group G campaign with a 71-63 victory at home over Gran Canaria Grupo Dunas. The Polish side held Gran Canaria to just 36% shooting from the field while out-rebounding the Spaniards 36-30, including 14 offensive boards. Andrej Urlep's Slask survived a poor night from outside - 3-of-12 from three-point range - as Jared Homan (17 points and 10 rebounds) and Torrell Martin (13 and 10) each registered double-doubles and Dominik Tomczyk chipped in 15 points. The visitors had hoped for a better start, though Carl English scored 20 points to lead all scorers. But the rest of the Gran Canaria's starting five totalled just 14 points while Kornel David had 13 points and six rebounds off the bench.

Wroclaw came out very strong defensively to start the game, working very hard in opening a 25-14 gap after one period. The Spaniards - ULEB Cup eighthfinalists in 2004 and 2007 - worked themselves back into the game and had the deficit down to 40-31 at the break. Gran Canaria continued to work hard defensively and allowed just 13 points in the third quarter, though they still trailed 53-47 going into the fourth. And the hosts found just enough offense to hold of Salvador Maldonado's team from Gran Canaria.
