CSKA dominates the Leningradka Derby

CSKA Moscow confirmed its great moment in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season by downing cross-town rivals Khimki Moscow Region 69-78 in the Leningradka Derby at Arena Mytishchi on Thursday. CSKA improved to 16-6 in the standings and grabbed its fifth consecutive win. Khimki dropped to 9-13 after registering its sixth loss in seven games. Mike James led the winners with 21 points, while Johannes Voigtmann had 15 and 14 rebounds. Kyle Hines added 13 points and Howard Sant-Roos 12 for CSKA. Alexey Shved led Khimki with 27 points. Janis Timma added 12 for the hosts. Sergey Monia, Shved and Timma each hit a triple to give Khimki an early 15-11 lead. Sant-Roos rescued CSKA, getting help from James and Voigtmann to put the guests ahead, 19-23 after 10 minutes. CSKA's second unit responded in the second quarter and an outstanding James boosted his team's margin to 32-40 at halftime. Voigtmann and Sant-Roos stepped up after the break and a three-point play by Semen Antonov sealed the outcome, 38-59, at the end of the third quarter. Khimki never recovered.

Stefan Jovic and Devin Booker got Khimki going but Hines dunked and Voigtmann added a jump hook to quickly tied it at 4-4. Monia and James each struck from downtown but so did Shved for a 10-7 Khimki lead. Sant-Roos scored fed Joel Bolomboy for an alley-oop dunk but Timma kept Khimki in charge, 15-11. James and a red-hot Sant-Roos combined for 8 points in a 1-10 run that Voigtmann capped with a layup for a 16-21 CSKA lead. Jonas Jerebko downed a triple but Voigtmann scored again to restore a 19-23 CSKA edge after 10 minutes. Vyacheslav Zaytsev dunked early in the second quarter and Timma buried a three-pointer off a screen to let Khimki regain the lead, 24-23. Bolomboy took over with an off-balance layup which Darrun Hilliard followed with a fastbreak basket that put CSKA back in charge, 24-27. James buried an outstanding three-pointer in transition, getting help from Voigtmann and Ron Baker to give the guests a 29-36 margin. Jovic hit from beyond the arc but CSKA kept scoring fluently in the paint. Hines scored down low off a great pass by Nikita Kurbanov, then Voigtmann dunked for a 32-40 score at halftime. Voigtmann sank a wide open triple soon after the break to make it a double-digit game, 32-43. Timma and Shved tried to change things for Khimki but Voigtmann and Sant-Roos scored around the basket to keep CSKA way ahead, 36-47. James silenced the crowd with a show-stopping dunk, Voigtmann added a put-back basket and Sant-Roos sank a jumper that broke the game open, 36-53, after an 0-8 run. Hilliard connected from downtown and Antonov added a layup-plus-free throw to seal a 38-59 score after three quarters. Khimki kept fighting, as Shved had 5 points in a 0-7 run that got the hosts within 46-59. Hines rescued CSKA with a three-point play and Sant-Roos beat the shot clock with a wild turnaround jumper to restore a 52-66 lead. James downed a 10-meter triple but Shved and Jovic also struck from downtown to keep Khimki within 56-69. Nothing changed after that, as CSKA kept full control until the final buzzer.

Pivotal performer

Sant-Roos arguably had his best game in his short time with CSKA, showcasing his skills with a true all-around performance. He finished the game with 12 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 steals and 2 fouls drawn for a PIR of 18 in just his third EuroLeague game.

Game-changing moment

CSKA broke the game open midway through the third quarter with three consecutive great plays. In the best one, Sant-Roos dove to save a backcourt violation and James detonated one of the most outstanding dunks of the season. Voigtmann scored around the basket and Sant-Roos added a jumper. All of a sudden, CSKA led 36-53 after an 0-8 run and had taken full control for good.

Stellar stat

CSKA protected the paint really well, especially in the first half, in which Khimki scored just 2 of 12 two-point shots (16.7%). CSKA outrebounded Khimki by 16-22 before halftime, too. Nothing changed after the break: CSKA finished the game with 23-of-43 two-point shooting and 16 offensive rebounds, limiting Khimki to just 7 of 20 two-pointers and 6 offensive boards.

Did you notice?

A moment of silence took place to honor Robert Archibald and Kobe Bryant, who passed away this weekend. Additionally, Khimki took a 24-second violation to start the game, and CSKA followed that with an 8-second backcourt violation. The late Bryant wore both numbers, 8 and 24, during his NBA career. Both teams wore special T-shirts during teams presentations to honor Bryant, too.

Next game:

CSKA welcomes standings leader Anadolu Efes Istanbul in Round 23 next Tuesday to open a double-round week. Khimki visits Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv on Wednesday.

"Congratulations to CSKA and Coach Dimitris Itoudis on a great win. CSKA was better in everything, they were faster, more aggressive, fought for positions and balls much better than us, so they won. Many experts talk about our defense, but it's not the problem. The problem is our children's mistakes in offense and you saw what level of mistakes we made today. We usually have problems with rebounds, but the way we played today... It is impossible to win a EuroLeague game having made 18 turnovers and allowing the opponent to pick up 16 offensive boards. All this speaks about the character, activity and desire to win. These are just masculine qualities that we lost today. Without this, it is impossible to win against CSKA or any other EuroLeague team. Of course, we lost an important player, Jeremy Evans, who usually takes 7-10 rebounds, and today his absence was felt in this aspect. However, this does not give us the right to lose the fight for the rebounds, because we have 10 more players who have to fight. Before the game, I said: it doesn't matter what players play, it's important how they play and fight. Today this fight was not enough to win."
ITOUDIS, DIMITRIS
CSKA Moscow
"First of all, congratulations, because it is not easy to play against such a talented team, and a great offensive and defensive team. I think we changed our mindset. Recently, we had some pictures in our mind, on the rivalry we have with Khimki, and we played a different game. At least for three quarters, I think we were a very solid team. With all due respect, at the end, Shved has this talent to go and make points but we were giving him too much space and we lost that quarter, but I think that this +21 after three quarters was almost the perfect game. Besides the congratulations, I would like to say that we have a lot of work. Three good quarters, and we want to add this fourth quarter. In these games, the hustle points and hustle in general makes the difference. And I think we did that today, not only on rebounds, also in nobody's balls and in situations when it looked like we may lose the ball, we chased the ball, took it back, rebounding... It was not rebounds only, but going out of bounds and taking it back, scoring points or drawing fouls. We were good and, especially for three quarters, we were on the level we want to be in this EuroLeague marathon."

"We beat them last game [in the VTB United League] by 15 or something like that and came here with thoughts we could do like this. We didn't play together, so it was tough to come out with a win, especially against such a good team like CSKA. They moved the ball well, rebounded well, I mean all these things we didn't do tonight. I don't think we played good. I think we were really late today. You can't do that in the EuroLeague where everything matters. It's tough for us right now, but we have to move on and think about the next game. But we definitely have some things to work on because it was not pretty tonight."
VOIGTMANN, JOHANNES
CSKA Moscow
"In the second, half, we had really good control of the game. We defended really, really well and had an outstanding third quarter. We kind of got a little bit out of it in the last quarter but overall, we had a very solid game and I am really happy to get this win here. We are going to have a lot of shots and that is obviously a lot of rebounds. We are a team that can really dominate the boards and that's what we came here for, and we did pretty good job on that."
SANT-ROOS, HOWARD
CSKA Moscow
"It was a great win. We played with great energy, got great hustle points. It feels good to win. I am just trying to help my team whatever way it is possible. I have to be a stopper out there, and if it is what I have to go to take wins, that is what I am going to do."
