Dolomiti Energia Trento wins Group K’s Italian derby

Dolomiti Energia Trento routed Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia 82-63 in an all-Italian club fixture in Group K of the Last 32. Trento improved to 5-1 at home this season in a game it controlled from start to finish. The hosts scored the first 5 points en route to a 20-2 advantage, which Reggio Emilia never fully recovered from. The visitors rallied to within 8 on multiple occasions, but never closer. Jamarr Sanders made 4 of 7 three-point shots to lead Trento with 16 points. Trent Lockett added 15 points, Davide Pascolo scored 12 and Diego Flaccadori 10. Pietro Aradori paced Reggio Emilia with 13 points and Ojars Silins scored 10 in defeat.

Trento started strong with Lockett scoring first before Sanders sank a three-pointer. Achille Polonara registered Reggio Emilia’s first basket. Four points from Pascolo triggered a 15-0 Trento charge for 20-2 lead. Andres Forray added a three and Julian Wright scored twice in that run. Aradori scored twice and Polonara added 3 points over two possessions to end the first quarter at 22-9. Wright set up Filippo Baldi Rossi for a three-pointer and scored himself to boost the difference to 27-11, but Darjus Lavrinovic scored and then assisted on a Stefano Gentile three to keep Reggio Emilia in the fight. Vladimir Veremeenko’s first basket made it 29-18 with three minutes left in the half. Free throws by Lockett and Flaccadori stretched the lead back to 15, but the visitors answered with a 0-7 run capped by a Silins three-pointer. After 4 points from Pascolo, a second Silins three made it 37-28 at the break.

Trento scored the first 3 points of the second through Forray and Lockett free throws, but Veremeenko soon had Reggio Emilia within 40-32. Back-to-back threes by Forray and Sanders helped Trento restore its control and Lockett pushed the lead to 16. Dominique Sutton’s basket-plus-foul made it 53-34. Gentile and Aradori thrice brought the visitors back to 15, but Wright made it 62-45 through three quarters. Flaccadori had the lead in the 20s two-and-a-half minutes into the fourth quarter. Three-pointers by Sanders and Lockett made it 74-51 with five minutes to go. The teams traded shots the rest of the way, but the outcome was long decided by that point as Trento continued its Eurocup season on the right foot.

BUSCAGLIA, MAURIZIO
Dolomiti Energia Trento
"We played the way we wanted to, with the right intensity and managing to stick to our initial plan. It is one of the best played games so far, as we reached this result against a very powerful opponent. However, we have to keep working hard, as our path to the Last 32 has just started."
MENETTI, MASSIMILIANO
Grissin Bon Reggio Emilia
"Congratulations to Dolomiti Energia Trentino, who played some high-quality basketball tonight. However, I am upset with our attitude and the way we played in the first quarter, lacking in determination and spirit. Then, it is disappointing that often we back down too soon when the game gets complicated, and this is what happened in the third quarter. Our goal is to improve soon and to play with a different attitude in the next Eurocup game against Pinar Karsiyaka Izmir."
