Szolnoki Olaj opens Last 32 by beating Sassari

Szolnoki Olaj started the Last 32 in style by leading from start to finish in an 86-75 victory over Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari. A 12-0 run to finish the first quarter put the hosts up 23-8 and Sassari never got closer than 6 the rest of the way. Strahinja Milosevic starred with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists, while David Vojvoda paced the Szolnoki attack with 20 points. Stanley Burrell tallied 15 points and 7 assists in his debut and Kristzian Wittmann added 11 points. Christian Eyenga scored 23 for Sassari, but made just 1 of 6 free throws. MarQuez Haynes added 18 points and 7 assists and Matteo Formenti scored 12 on 4-of-4 three-point shooting.

Akos Keller scored twice for the hosts before Jarvis Varnado got Sassari on the scoreboard. A Formenti triple drew the visitors within 6-5 and it was 11-8 after Brian Sacchetti split free throws, but Szolnoki took charge after that. Sassari was held scoreless for the final four minutes of the opening quarter as Wittmann and Milosevic starred in a 12-0 run to make it 23-8 after 10 minutes. Baskets by Eyenga and Sacchetti broke the spell on Sassari’s hoop at the start of the second quarter, but Dino Gregory had the hosts back up by 15 soon. However Eyenga heated up and Varnado scored to make it 29-20. Milosevic connected from downtown to push the lead back to 37-22, but David Logan also nailed a three and Haynes’s bucket to end the half drew Sassari within 41-30 at the break.

Vojvoda and Milosevic kept Szolnoki comfortably ahead before Formenti buried a triple to spark a 0-9 Sassari run that brought the visitors within 46-41. Baskets by Oleksandr Lypovyy, Wittmann and Gregory restored a double-digit Szolnoki advantage. A Milosevic three-and-foul made it 56-43. After Haynes and Milos Borisov traded threes, Haynes finished the third quarter with 4 free throws to narrow the gap to 61-54. Varnado split free throws to bring Sassari within 6, however Vojvoda heated up and before long the difference was 10. Burrell got going and his triple boosted the difference to 72-60 with five-and-a-half minutes to go. Haynes struck from downtown and Eyenga scored too to revive the visitors. Formenti’s three-pointer and Eyenga’s put-back got Sassari as close as 78-72 with 90 seconds remaining. But a three-point play by Burrell followed by a steal all but sealed the outcome and he hosts held on for a crucial victory.

Head Coaches

POR, PETER
Szolnoki Olaj
"We tried to control the beginning of the game and not to let Sassari get away and run the court; that made a big difference in the big picture of the game. We got into a little hole in the second half, but at the end, defense won the game for us. We fought hard, played well and I am satisfied with my team."
CALVANI, MARCO
Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari
"I have to congratulate to our host, they played well today. We completely missed the first quarter and let Szolnok find its rhythm. In the last quarter we scraped our way back to 6 points, but were unfortunate on a few occasions. We have to concentrate from the beginning. Stanley Burrell made a huge difference, not just with his shots, but with his creativity."

Players

VOJVODA, DAVID
Szolnoki Olaj
"It was an another huge win for us, I have to congratulate all my teammates, everyone played his part in the game. We scouted the Italians very well and learned Sassari’s plays; that was important. Now we have a win in the second phase, but we have to stay on the ground."
EYENGA, CHRISTIAN
Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari
"We came here too cool as we were sure of the win and just had to play an easy game. It wasn’t so… Szolnok deserved the win, they were the better side and were far more aggressive than us."
