Ribas, Tomic lead Barcelona past Zvezda

FC Barcelona Lassa bounced back from recent losses in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season by thrashing Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade 88-54 at Palau Blaugrana on Friday. Barcelona improved to 8-17 in the standings, breaking a five-game losing streak, while Zvezda dropped to 10-15. Pau Ribas led the winners with 18 points. Taylor Rochestie had 13 for Zvezda and Ognjen Dobric added 10. Ribas and Heurtel shined early to give Barcelona a 17-12 margin at the end of the first quarter. A jumper by Heurtel soon made it a double-digit game before Tomic broke the glass with a big dunk on a pass from Ribas. He got help from an unstoppable Koponen to open a commanding 45-24 lead at halftime. Zvezda improved after the break and a three-pointer by James Feldeine brought the guests within 62-49 after three quarters. Ribas and Koponen rescued Barcelona, boosting the hosts' margin to 72-50 to seal the outcome minutes before the final buzzer.

James Feldeine got Zvezda going with a three-pointer and a driving layup but Ribas singlehandedly tied the game at 5-5. Free throws by Heurtel gave Barcelona a 17-12 lead after 10 minutes. Omic kept pacing the guests with an alleyoop layup early in the second quarter. Barcelona found a new go-to guy in Koponen, who downed a jumper and a three-pointer. He got help from Pierre Oriola and Heurtel to make it a double-digit game, 26-16. Ognjen Dobric and Juan Carlos Navarro joined the three-point shootout and a jump hook by Tomic gave Barcelona a 31-19 lead. Rochestie followed a jumper with a three-pointer but Ribas hit one from beyond the arc and fed Tomic for a vicious slam, shattering the glass and stopping the game for a few minutes. Koponen insisted from downtown Ribas added a reverse layup and a power basket by Adrien Moerman fixed the halftime score at 45-24.

Moerman dunked after the break and Koponen added a jumper for a 25-point Barcelona lead. Omic and Jankovic stepped up for Zvezda and a layup by Dobric made the hosts call timeout at 54-32. Tomic followed a jump hook with a dunk but Zvezda kept scoring fluently, as Rochestie, Dobric and Jankovic got the guests within 61-46. Feldeine hit a triple to bring Zvezda even closer, 62-49, after 30 minutes. Oriola hit a jump hook and Koponen added a three-pointer to make Zvezda call timeout at 67-49. Ribas nailed his fourth triple and added a layup to seal the outcome, 72-50. Zvezda kept trying but Barcelona had cruised to a well-deserved win.

Both teams return to action on Thursday as Barcelona visits Olympiacos Piraeus while Zvezda hosts Valencia Basket.

"Thanks to our continuity on defense from the first minutes until the last, we could play our basketball, individually and as a team. I am, of course, happy because everything went according to our game plan: organization on defense against the most important player for Red Star, Rochestie. The plan was to give him as little ball position as possible, and all our players – especially Jackson and Koponen – they did a great job. The result is the result, but to organize a defense against Red Star is not easy because they have many options. Maybe in the third quarter we were too happy, too early, with our game and started to try to make too many spectacular plays. Our goal in the next few games should be simple basketball, and in the last quarter we changed our concentration and dominated again.”

Players

NAVARRO, JUAN CARLOS
FC Barcelona Lassa
"The team has been pretty serious since the opening minute, working well on defense, which is what we wanted to show, to have a good defensive game, like we did in the Spanish League against Murcia and also tonight. This is the right way. We have to keep playing the same defense, be strong and play with high intensity."
TOMIC, ANTE
FC Barcelona Lassa
"It was a good game. We played really well tonight. Beating someone by 30 points is never easy and that proves we did a good job in both ends of the court, defense and offense. It is a big difference but I think we deserved this win because of everything we showed during the 40 minutes. When you [allow just] 50 points, obviously defense was the key. They had a lot of open shots, especially three-point shots, that they didn't make. We did close the rebounds, especially in the first half, and that was the key to the big difference in the first half. And then in the second half, we did our job until the end.”
LAZIC, BRANKO
Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade
"We played our worst game of the season. I congratulate Barcelona and apologize to our fans for the bad image we gave tonight. We now have to focus on our next goal, to win the Adriatic League and return to the EuroLeague next season."
