Belgacom Spirou Charleroi grabbed its second consecutive win in Group B by downing EWE Baskets Oldenburg 74-82 on the road on Wednesday. Spirou, which has no chance to advance to the Last 32, improved to 2-7 and denied Oldenburg the chance to reach the next round. Oldenburg dropped to 5-4 and will qualify if it beats Bilbao Basket next week or if it loses by up to 4 points and Cedevita Zagreb tops Elan Chalon-sur-Saone. Demond Mallet paced the winners with 17 points. Darryl Watkins added 15, Joe Trapani had 14, Wen Mukubu got 13 while Devin Green contributed 10 for Spirou. Andrea Crosariol led Oldenburg with 15 points. Rickey Paulding added 14, Dru Joyce had 12 while Chris Kramer got 11 for the hosts, which led 19-18 late in the first quarter. Watkins, Trapani and Mallet allowed Spirou to get a 13-point lead, 30-43, at halftime, and the guests managed to keep a safe edge until the final buzzer.

Trapani and Mallet gave Spirou an early 2-6 lead. Crosariol and Paulding stepped up for Oldenburg but Mallet singlehandedly kept the guests ahead, 10-12. Crosariol kept pacing the hosts and a three-pointer by Kramer gave Oldenburg its first lead, 19-18. Karol Gruszecki answered from downtown and Kramer tied it at 21-21 after 10 minutes. Three-pointers by Mallet and Gruszecki boosted Spirou's lead to 22-29 early in the second quarter. Crosariol struggled to find help around and back-to-back baskets by Watkins made it a double-digit game, 28-39. Trapani and Mallet boosted th guests' lead to 30-43 at halftime. Paulding and Julius Jenkins tried to ignite Oldenburg's comeback with back-to-back triples right after the break. Paulding insisted from downtown and a dunk by Crosariol ignited the crowd at 41-46. Mukubu stepped up with a layup and Mallet buried a triple but Joyce kept Oldenburg within 46-51. A 0-8 Spirou run that Mukubu capped with a jumper restored a 46-59 margin. Konrad Wysocki and Dominik Bahiense de Mello brought Oldenburg within 53-62 after 30 minutes. Kramer hit a jumper and consecutive layups by Paulding and Jenkins gave Oldenburg hope at 59-64. Mallet and Green stepped up to force the hosts to call timeout, 59-69, with 3 minutes left. Wysocki and Kramer kept trying but Spirou did not lose control and cruised to a win that could change the outcome of this group.

Head Coaches

MACHOWSKI, SEBASTIAN
EWE Baskets Oldenburg
"This loss leaves us with many things to talk about. I had hoped for and demanded a strong reaction from the team after the Bundesliga loss in Hagen. We showed good intensity in this week's practices, but none of that was on display tonight. We blew a great chance with this loss and now we have to regroup, refocus and correct the things that are not working for us at the moment. Our defense was bad - giving up 43 points in one half at home is inexcusable. Some players made bad decisions tonight, on a level which I haven't seen before. We need to show a different face in the coming games."
BOZZI, GIOVANNI
Belgacom Spirou Charleroi
"The explanation for our win is simple: We never gave up and we controlled the tempo of the game. You have to force a team like Oldenburg into a half-court game. So we took away the first eight seconds of the offense on almost every possession. I really appreciate how this team has played after the bad 0-7 start in our Eurocup campaign. The last two wins show the true potential of this team. I am really proud of the team tonight."

Players

KRAMER, CHRIS
EWE Baskets Oldenburg
"Charleroi had more intensity, worked harder for the rebounds and took our energy away. When they opened the lead up in the second quarter we just couldn't score and they got too many easy points. We still have a chance to advance, but it will be a tough game in Bilbao, as both teams have a lot to play for. If we get back to our old ways of playing defense and our usual level of intensity, we have a chance."
MALLET, DEMOND
Belgacom Spirou Charleroi
"We responded well to our bad start in the Eurocup. We had so many injuries at the start of the season, that the team is only really coming together as a unit right now. We kept working hard and wanted these wins for our pride and as something to build on for the rest of the season. It was a really a team win tonight, with everybody contributing."
