Petr Benda - CEZ Basketball Nymburk - Qualifying Round 2012CEZ Basketball Nymburk cruised to a 91-78 victory over BC Budivelnik Kiev in their Group A opener. The Czech champions used a 30-8 run that bridged the second and third quarters and turned Budivelnik’s slim lead into a 20-point Nymburk advantage. Petr Benda led Nymburk with 18 points and Lukas Palyza scored 17 on perfect 5-for-5 three-point shooting. Drew Naymick chipped in with 9 points in 11 minutes on the floor, while George Tsintsadze had 14 points as the only Budivelnik player in double figures. Sergiy Gorbenko and Malcolm Delaney each had 9 points in defeat.

Tsintsadze hit a jumper for Budivelnik to open the scoring, while the hosts needed a few minutes to start their engines before making an 8-2 run with Mike Taylor scoring twice inside and giving Nymburk an early lead. Benda scored back-to-back-to-back layups to extend Nymburk's advantage to 16-11 and Naymick's layup-plus-foul made it a 6-point game. However, Delaney hit a shot to make it 19-15 at the end of first quarter, while Michalis Anisimov scored a layup at the start of the second to spark the visitors' run in which a couple layups from Pavlo Burenko combined with a Gorbenko triple and Igor Kirvtsov's shot gave Budivelnik a 24-26 advantage. It was short-lived, though, as Nymburk hit 4 three-pointers in the next three minutes. Palyza hit two and Miljan Pavkovic and Radoslav Rancik each hit one to put Nymburk up 38-30. The margin reached double figures after the hosts made 3 of 4 free throws, while more three-pointers from Palyza and a last-second shot from Pavkovic gave the Czech champions a 48-34 halftime lead.

Benda made a layup to open the third quarter and before jumpers from Pavkovic and Rancik made it 54-34. Dainius Salenga scored twice and Anisimov hit a triple for Budivelnik, but Nymburk kept the game in complete control with buckets from Taylor, Ranick and Benda. Another little run, this time 8-1, extended the lead to 68-44. Tsintsadze and Kostiantyn Anikiienko got to the foul line for Budivelnik, but they combined to make only 5 of 8 free throws and Naymick scored twice in the finale 60 seconds of the quarter for a 74-53 Nymburk lead going into the final 10 minutes. Burenko made a layup for Budivelnik to start the fourth quarter, but Palyza and Hruban made sure there would be no hopes of a big comeback. Vojtech Hruban hit a jumper to make it the biggest lead of the night, 86-61, before Gorbenko made back-to-back triples and Anikiienko scored 4 points in a 2-14 run that halved the deficit before the final buzzer.

CEZ Basketball Nymburk
"We played great offense for 35 minutes. We had enough time to prepare for this game. I am glad we started with a win, because we are in a hard group and you never know what will happen. What is very important for me is that the players are able to follow our instructions all game."
BAGATSKIS, AINARS
Budivelnik Kiev
"I told the players before the game that we have to be patient, disciplined and to defend well, because Nymburk knows how to use opponents' mistakes. I warned them of player No. 11, the best shooter on Nymburk. It is hard to win with just 20 rebounds and against 20 turnovers. Nymburk is great team and played all game the same way. Congratulations to Nymburk for the first win in the Eurocup."
