Lasme leads UNICS to victory at newcomer Andorra

UNICS Kazan played the role of spoiler by going on the road to defeat newcomer Morabanc Andorra 68-76 in the latter's first 7DAYS EuroCup game ever on Wednesday in Group A. UNICS finished with 9 blocked shots, tying its EuroCup club record, in big part thanks to the 2016 EuroCup Finals MVP Stephane Lasme who was all over the place in victory, collecting 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks in 20 minutes of play. Jamar Smith netted 15 points for UNICS, and Quino Colom returned to his home country to finish the game with 12 points. Anton Ponkrashov contributed with 10 points in victory, while Jaka Blazic with 11 points and David Jelinek with 10 were Andorra’s top scorers.

Moussa Diagne scored a historic first Andorra basket in EuroCup action before Blazic went coast-to-coast and Vladimir Jankovic hit a mid-range jumper that made it 8-5 early on. But Ponkrashov nailed one from downtown, and Smith netted a pair of long jumpers that helped UNICS go back into the lead and hold it at 16-18 after 10 minutes. Baskets were few and far between in the second quarter before a three-point play from Evgeny Koleshnikov opened 24-30 lead midway through. Andorra stayed in touch mostly thanks to Blazic, who scored 7 points during the rest of the quarter, but UNICS still held 35-41 margin at the break. In the third quarter the visitors used stiff defense and steady offense to keep increasing the lead. Lasme blocked 3 shots and scored 6 points during a 0-10 run that opened 42-56 lead with a minute to go in the third. The hosts did their best to stay in the game, and were helped by three-pointers from David Walker and Andrew Albicy. UNICS remained in front through Lasme and Colom, but Andorra made one last push with Walker’s second triple, getting within 63-69. Coming out of a timeout with little over 2 minutes to go, however, Smith needed less than 20 seconds to first nail a triple, then follow it up with a fastbreak layup, pushing the lead back to double-digits, sealing the deal.

In Round 2 next week, Andorra travels to face another newcomer FIAT Turin on Tuesday, while UNICS will host Levallois Metropolitans on Wednesday.

"We knew we were playing against a great team, a team used to playing at a high pace, a very big team, that can switch defensively and a very physical team. They showed why they are one of the favorites to win this competition. We had trouble getting in rhythm and making them play at our pace. We were too slow and static, this made us miss open threes in the first quarter and many free throws, and we never caught fire. The good news is we dominated the defensive rebound but our lack of spark and precision meant that, in the stretches of the game when we could have pulled away, we weren’t able to. Especially against an opponent like UNICS. We have to improve, but this isn’t the end of the world. We have another game on Sunday and we have to continue to grow."

“It was a very difficult game. We know that this is very tough place to play. Last year, very few teams won here. Andorra plays a particular game, very fast, quick hits on fastbreaks. We didn’t play good, but we finally won. That is what is important. Now we must continue. This was a first game. I am satisfied that we were very consistent defensively in the third quarter when we built the lead.”
