Record night lifts Baskonia over Khimki

KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz used one of its best offensive performances ever in the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague to down the visiting Khimki Moscow Region 104-86 on Friday at Fernando Buesa Arena. Baskonia's 38 third-quarter points set a club record for scoring in any quarter of a EuroLeague game. Baskonia also set a new club record with 31 assists. Its sixth straight home win lifted Baskonia to 13-12, tied for the sixth-best record in the league. Among seven players scoring in double figures, Vincent Poirier had 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Johannes Voigtmann flirted with a triple-double collecting 16 points, 9 rebounds and a career-high 9 assists. Matt Janning and Shavon Shields also scored 13 apiece in victory. Malcolm Thomas had 19 points and Tony Crocker netted 18 on 6-for-9 shooting for Khimki. Alexey Shved had 15 points and 8 assists in a defeat that dropped Khimki to 9-16 and the brink of elimination from the playoffs race.

Triples by Charles Jenkins, Shved and Egor Vialtsev before a pair of dunks by Thomas helped Khimki open a 12-17 lead. Baskonia answered with a 10-0 run during which Poirier scored 6 points to lead 22-17 after 10 minutes. Khimki regained a 25-27 lead early in the second quarer following 2 three-pointers from Sergey Monia. Luca Vildoza and Voigtmann sparked Baskonia, but Crocker hit 3 triples that gave Khimki a 40-41 halftime advantage. Baskonia started fast in the third quarter as Voigtmann and Shields assisted or scored on each basket in an 8-0 run to a 48-43 lead. As the pace quickened Janning scored 5 points and that helped extend the margin to 59-48 midway through the third quarter. Khimki got within 62-55 on 4 free throws from Petr Gubanov, but Baskonia scored the next 16 points, including back-to-back triples from Vildoza followed by a three-pointer each from Darrun Hilliard and Ilimane Diop as the hosts opened a huge 78-55 advantage in the final minute of the third quarter. Monia and Shved each hit a triple in response and Crocker's shot from deep would get Khimki within 84-70 midway through the fourth quarter. However, back-to-back-to-back triples from Voigtmann, Janning and Shields made it 94-74, sealing the deal.

Key run

Khimki seemed not to be going away, getting within 62-55 in the third quarter, but in the next 120 seconds Baskonia hit 4 of 4 three-pointers – from Luca Vildoza, Matt Janning and Ilimane Diop – to start a 16-0 run to open a 23-point margin before the end of the third quarter.

PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
KIROLBET Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz
"The third quarter was key. We played more tough, with more speed, totally different than what we did in the first two quarters. We stopped their three-point shots, but we also had turnovers. In the first two quarters we had 9 turnovers, and they always scored after them. We have five more finals. Every game will be important like the one tonight. We might need to win three maybe four games. We don’t know how many we will need to win to get into playoffs."
KURTINAITIS, RIMAS
Khimki Moscow Region
"I want to congratulate Baskonia on a really good victory. They were stronger tonight. We don't have our entire team available because of injuries, and we had tough game against CSKA Moscow in the VTB League. Guys are not ready to play two tough games in a row. We lost the energy in the third and especially in the fourth quarter, because our rotation is not so big. We are not a physically strong and a tall team, and we lost rebounds 42-17, that is one of the keys to the game tonight. We have a difficult situation, we have next Real Madrid, also games against CSKA and Barcelona on the road. So, it is really difficult. But we are still in the game, but it is the EuroLeague so we will try, and even if we miss playoffs, we will give our maximum and look for victories."

"We attacked the third quarter really great. We made the difference. In three minutes, middle of the half, we shot great, defended great, and that was the key. Every game will be very important for us. We have to go game after game and win the most games we can."
