Shved, Gill spark Khimki to Tel Aviv win

Alexey Shved recorded his first career double-double and Anthony Gill set a career-high with 24 points to lead Khimki Moscow Region to an important 91-94 road win over Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv at Menora Mivtachim Arena on Thursday. The win is a significant boost to Khimki's playoff chances as its record improved to 15-11, while Maccabi fell to 13-13. Maccabi finished the third quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 66-65 lead, but Shved started the fourth quarter with a three-point play and though Maccabi would tie it five more times, it never regained the lead. Shved tallied 10 points and 3 assists in the final 10 minutes and Gill scored 11 to secure the win. Shved finished with 22 points and a career-high 12 assists, despite an off night from downtown, where he made just 1 of 9 attempts. Malcolm Thomas added 16 points against his former club and Egor Vialtsev added 10 for the winners. Pierre Jackson paced Maccabi with 25 points and 7 assists, DeShaun Thomas scored 16, DeAndre Kane had 13 and Norris Cole and Alex Tyus added 10 points apiece. Before the game, there was a brief ceremony to honor 2014 EuroLeague champion Devin Smith who was inducted into the Maccabi Hall of Fame.

Rebounding played an early role as the hosts scored their first four baskets off second-chance opportunities, but Khimki relied on athletic moves by Gill and Thomas to stay close. A Tyus put-back made it 13-8, but Shved countered with a triple. Shved then turned creator with a pair of assists in what became a 0-9 run for a 13-17 lead. Cole came off the bench and scored a pair of baskets in the paint to even the score, but Shved free throws left Khimki ahead 19-21 after 10 minutes. Sergey Monia connected on back-to-back shots from downtown for an 8-point lead after which the hosts called timeout. Jonah Bolden hit back with a four-point play, but Charles Jenkins and Marko Todorovic kept Khimki rolling. Cole was whistled for his third foul and then got a technical after which Vialtsev nailed a three from the corner for the game's first double-digit lead, 25-36. Jackson heated up for the hosts to close the gap to 35-40. After free throws by Kane and Jackson made it a 3-point game, Vialtsev made it 39-44 at the break.

Gill opened the second half with a three-pointer and the teams started to trade baskets. Like at the start of the game, offensive rebounds proved to be an important weapon for Maccabi. A three-point play on the fast break by DeShaun Thomas drew the hosts within 51-53, but Malcolm Thomas righted the ship for Khimki with a slam. DeShaun Thomas and Malcolm Thomas went head to head with Shved delivering assists for the Khimki man as the visitors went ahead 57-63. The introductions of Cole and Parakhouski off the bench sparked Maccabi, which finished the third quarter on a 7-0 tear during which the guard scored a key basket, the center had a big block and DeShaun Thomas nailed a go-ahead three for a 66-65 Maccabi lead through three quarters. Shved went to the basket for a three-point play to start the fourth quarter, but Michael Roll promptly tied the score with his first basket. Maccabi tied it twice more, however Khimki had an answer each time. Vialtsev then nailed a triple to make it 72-77 with six minutes remaining. Maccabi stayed close; Kane hit a three and drew a charge from Shved to make it 78-80 with three and a half minutes to play. Jackson's fifth triple of the night tied it at 84-84 with 1:20 remaining. Gill connected from downtown with 36 seconds to play for an 86-89 Khimki edge. After DeShaun Thomas missed a three, Gill scored on the break to all but ice the game.

SPAHIJA, NEVEN

"We made so many mistakes, sometimes it was very difficult to understand the miscommunication. Of course I’m the coach, I’m the leader, I’m the one with the most responsibility for the result, but it’s tough to win such an important game and I’m so sorry that we made those kinds of mistakes, like to pass the ball into their hands to make layups without opportunity to defend. That kind of stuff killed us. I cannot say we didn't fight, but to fight is sometimes not enough, you have to give quality. Today, at the end, they had more than us. This first 20 minutes was very bad basketball. I couldn’t find the right people to play offense and defense, it was always some mix of offense with bad defense and the opposite. At the second half, especially at the end of the third quarter, we found a way, but unfortunately we made so many mistakes at the end and they won the game."
BARTZOKAS, GEORGIOS
Khimki Moscow Region

"First of all I have to give credit to [my players]. This environment is very difficult, so winning over here is very important. In a very crucial moment of the season we made this great win without many players, with a lot of injuries, with a lot of problems. So I have to give credit to our players."

"We forced them to play under big pressure by leading almost the whole game. Finally they made some big threes and also they put huge pressure on us, but we managed to win the game with some good decisions at the end of the game. We played unselfishly, we shared the ball. Alexey Shved had 12 assists, which was very important in this game, and we managed to win the game, which was very important for our future in the EuroLeague. Congratulations to our players."

"Tough game obviously for us. It was a game of runs. It's disappointing how it ended, but I'm proud of how we fought run after run and we stayed together throughout. That’s something we need to keep doing going forward... We missed easy layups, we had a few turnovers and when you are playing these games, every possession matters and we came a few possessions short."
GILL, ANTHONY
Khimki Moscow Region
"I think we just toughed it out. I think we just played hard the whole game and we ended up with the win, which is amazing for us. We needed that win as a club to take Khimki somewhere we haven’t been before. So we're trying to do something special this year."
