Campazzo stars for Madrid in Milan

Facu Campazzo recorded the first double-double of his EuroLeague career to lead Real Madrid to a 77-88 road win over AX Armani Exchange Milan at Mediolanum Forum on Tuesday. Los Blancos made sure to keep at least a share of fourth place in the standings by lifting its record to 16-10 with its 10th consecutive victory over Milan. The loss dropped Milan to 9-17. With leading scorer Luka Doncic sidelined, Camapzzo stepped up with 14 points and a career-high 11 assists for the winners. Gustavo Ayon scored 15 points off the bench, Jaycee Carroll added 12 and Jeffery Taylor 10. Seven different Madrid players made threes as the team shot 13 for 22 from behind the arc (59.1%). Curtis Jerrells led Milan with 18 points plus 6 assists, Mindaugas Kuzminskas and Andrew Goudelock scored 11 points each and Vladimir Micov had 10.

After Goudelock opened the scoring for the hosts, but Carroll drilled a pair of three-pointers and Campazzo delivered 4 assists in a 0-12 Madrid run. After a Milan timeout, Goudelock scored in the lane before Micov became the second Milan scorer with a layup that made it 6-14. Walter Tavares intimidated the Milan scorers with 3 early blocks, but Kaleb Tarczewski fought back with a slam-plus-foul and Jerrells added a layup to close the gap to 15-18. A Campazzo triple on the buzzer gave Madrid a 17-25 lead after 10 minutes. Threes by Jerrells and Kuzminskas had the fans on their feet at 23-25, however Chasson Randle and Rudy Fernandez hit back-to-back threes as Madrid raced to a 30-39 lead midway through the second quarter. After a Milan timeout, Trey Thompkins buried another triple to restore a double-digit Madrid advantage. Ayon scored in the final minute of the half to make it 36-49 at the break.

Milan scored on the first two possessions of the second half, but Madrid fired in 9 unanswered points to lead 40-58 on a layup by Campazzo. The hosts tried to remain in the game through free throws by Andrea Cinciarini and Kuzminskas. A three by Cinciarini closed the gap to 12, but Ayon’s layup made it 54-68 after three quarters. Ayon and Fernandez kept the visitors cruising and the former took the lead into the 20s with a layup-plus-foul. Milan threatened when Jerrells hit 3 threes and Dairis Bertans added another in a 14-2 run to make it 74-83 with less than three minutes to go. Thompkins scored in the low post and Milan went cold at the worst time as Los Blancos rolled on to victory.

"I think that we tried, but at this moment we are not at this level. It's so many games that we are playing that right now we are not at the energy to compete with Real. But I think that at the end the approach of the game put us in trouble for all the game. We started with a 10-point [deficit] immediately. We missed some good shots, open shots and gave them the chance to create fast breaks and then it is difficult when they were in rhythm. In the end the game was like this. If you keep the gap at 9 or 10 points, it’s different. If you go down by 15 or 20, it’s not possible. At the beginning of the game they blocked 2 or 3 shots and then we panicked a little bit to attack the rim. This lack of confidence killed us."

"It was difficult, because we know how much Milan can score from everywhere; they have very good shooters outside and solid big guys, so it was very important for us to keep playing defense for 40 minutes. I think even at the end with a 20-point advantage, we knew we had to stop those three-point lines, those shots, because we always have the scare of them coming back with those three-pointers. So I think we played solid defense and offensively we were able to move the ball well, pass to the open man. We missed some very easy shots, but we also made some tough ones, so I am very happy for the victory."

"This was like a final to us. We had played the game before actually playing it with the scouting. Milan plays great basketball with individual quality. We knew that if we stopped their scorers we had good chances to win. We set the tempo in defense and I think we played smart. We faltered a bit at the end, but we are working towards staying focused for the whole game. You can't play always perfect."
