Campazzo ties record as Real sees off ALBA in thriller
Real Madrid overcame ALBA Berlin 97-103 in one of the games of the season at Mercedes-Benz Arena. A record-breaking first quarter allowed Real to race 26 points in front, but 13-0 and 11-1 runs from ALBA in the second helped the host go ahead 60-50 at the break. Real responded with a 0-14 run in the third and managed to stay in front the rest of the way. Facundo Campazzo tied the competition’s single-game record with 19 assists before fouling out near the end. Jaycee Carroll and Anthony Randolph both scored 27 points for Real, each downing 5-of-8 three-pointers. Jeffery Taylor added 13 points in victory. Rokas Giedraitis led ALBA with 17 points, with Marcus Eriksson scoring 12 and Martin Hermannsson and Johannes Thiemann both getting 10. Real stayed in second place at 18-6, with ALBA dropped to 8-16.
Carroll and Peyton Siva were both on target twice from long distance in the early going, before Randolph took over with 7 straight points for a 6-13 lead. Taylor scored from close-range and deep to extend the lead to double digits before Carroll netted another triple for a 10-23 edge. Randolph sank a pair of corner triples and a mid-range jumper, all from Campazzo assists, to make it 14-34. Giedraitis brought some relief for ALBA with a pair of baskets, but Campazzo added a triple and the unstoppable Randolph scored again to make it 25-41 at the end of the first. ALBA raced back early in the second with deep strikes from Thiemann and Hermannsson, who then scored again in penetration before free throws cut the gap to 40-43. Usman Garuba snapped the 13-0 run with a pair of close-range scores, but Luke Sikma and Landry Nnoko netted at the rim to give ALBA its first lead, 48-47. Eriksson struck from deep before Nnoko and Tyler Cavanaugh battled to score inside, fixing the halftime score at 60-50 after an 11-1 run.
Randolph’s triple early in the third was canceled out by two from Giedraitis, but three buckets from Carroll and triples from Taylor and Randolph got Real level, 68-68. Carroll sent Real ahead from deep to complete a 0-14 run and soon netted another mid-range shot before Walter Tavares scored inside for a 71-79 lead after three quarters. Carroll netted another triple and Mickey dunked to make it a 10-point game. Gabriel Deck and Sergio Llull both scored from deep to protect that advantage. Consecutive threes from Jonas Mattiseck gave ALBA hope before Campazzo tied the single-game assists record by finding Deck for an 84-96 lead. Triples from Thiemann and Makai Mason made it 93-99 with 2 minutes left. Campazzo fouled out, but Randolph nailed a mid-range jumper and Real’s defense did the rest.
Campazzo ties assists mark
Facundo Campazzo joined Stefan Jovic at the top of the all-time single-game assists chart by dishing 19 assists, missing out on the chance to break the record as he fouled out with 2:02 remaining. Campazzo dished 11 assists in the opening quarter, the most recorded by an individual player in a quarter since those records started being taken in 2007-08. The Argentine also passed the career milestone of 500 assists in the competition.
Randolph stars in record start
Real made a stunning start to the game, racing to 41 points after 10 minutes – the club’s record in a quarter – by making 15 of its first 17 field goals in a near-flawless exhibition of offensive basketball. Anthony Randolph was the main man, scoring 19 points by converting all 7 of his field-goal attempts. But Real then went of 3-of-16 from the field in the second quarter as ALBA roared back.
ALBA’s record-breaking second quarter
ALBA responded to the first quarter blitz from Real by launching its own record-breaking quarter with a 35-9 partial in the second. That was the German team’s highest points tally ever scored in a single quarter and the 26-point margin was the worst ever suffered by Real in a EuroLeague quarter.
Next round
Real returns to the road after the bye week to visit Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul on Thursday, February 20. ALBA is also on its travels on the same night, visiting to Zenit St Petersburg.
