Laboral Kutxa wins final home game, eliminates Fenerbahce Ulker

Laboral Kutxa Vitoria bid farewell to its home floor in style by hitting 13 three-pointers and knocking Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul out of the playoff race with a 95-73 victory on Thursday night at Fernando Buesa Arena. With its second consecutive win, already-eliminated Laboral improved to 4-9 in Group E, while Fenerbahce dropped to 5-8. The hosts took the lead for good at the end of the first quarter and behind Andres Nocioni and Tibor Pleiss built a 47-38 halftime lead. After the break, Laboral came out with a 13-1 run fueled by Thomas Heurtel, opening up a 21-point margin and never looked. Pleiss collected 15 points plus 10 rebounds, and Nocioni also scored 15 in victory. Heurtel had 14 points and dished 10 assists, and Fernando San Emeterio also netted 14. Lamont Hamilton, back after missing almost two months with an injury, had 11 points in 14 minutes, while Adam Hanga chipped in with 10. Bo McCalebb scored 19 points for Fenerbahce. Bojan Bogdanovic added 14 points, while Linas Kleiza had 9 points and 11 rebounds in defeat.

First quarter: Laboral gets it going from downtown

Luka Zoric and Heurtel traded jumpers to open the scoring, and were followed by Bogdanovic with another jumper for Fenerbahce and a driving layup from San Emeterio for the hosts. After a steal and a dunk from Nemanja Bjelica at 4-6, Laboral went in front with a triple from Fabien Causeur. Bogdanovic used another turnover from the hosts for a fastbreak basket, but Pleiss scored from close range and Heurtel from mid-range for an 11-8 Laboral lead. Fenerbahce answered with three-pointers from Emir Preldzic and Melih Mahmutoglu, and Oguz Savas scored a layup to make 12-16. But Lamont Hamilton, back after missing almost two months with an injury, answered from downtown. Then, with a fastbreak from San Emeterio and a three-pointer from Nocioni, Laboral led 20-18 after the first quarter.

Second quarter: Hosts take off behind Pleiss, Nocioni

Pleiss scored inside to start the second quarter, and after a reverse layup from Preldzic, the hosts snapped a basket-for-basket trend as another triple from Nocioni and a tip-in from Pleiss helped Laboral to 29-21. McCalebb replied with an explosive slam, and followed it with a layup, but Giuseppe Poeta sank a triple, then fed Adam Hanga for a reverse alley-oop dunk, before Nocioni hit his third three-pointer at 37-29. Hanga and Linas Kleiza traded layups, and Kleiza hit a long jumper for the visitors to make it 40-34. But Pleiss scored a pair of tough baskets from close range, and while McCalebb drove for a layup on the other end, San Emeterio's transition three-pointer made it 47-38 at halftime.

Third quarter: Heurtel paces Laboral to a huge lead

Heurtel nailed a triple and drove for a fastbreak layup to start the second ahlf, before Leo Mainoldi finished another fastbreak and made it 54-38. After a timeout from visiting coach Zeljko Obradovic, triples from San Emeterio and Heurtel capped a 13-1 run, making it 60-39. Zoric scored a basket-plus foul and a layup on a breakaway for Fenerbahce, but Pleiss made a fastbreak dunk and Hamilton fought his way for a layup-plus-foul and a 65-44 advantage. McCalebb went coast-to-coast for a layup, but Laboral scored at will, extending the difference to 77-50 with Mainoldi and Hamilton hitting triples, and Nocioni adding a pair of baskets. Before the end of the quarter, Izzet Turkyilmaz got himself on the scoreboard with a tip-in, but Laboral was well ahead, holding a 78-54 lead.

Fourth quarter: Vitoria bids farewell to fans with romp

Nocioni and Hanga extended the difference to 82-54 before Bogdanovic hit a three-pointer. Bjelica also added a triple for the visitors, but Causer and Hanga made it 88-60. The pace and scoring slowed with McCalebb the only scorer in almost three minutes of the quarter, before San Emeterio and Heurtel scored from close range, and David Jelinek hit one from deep to make it 95-66, the biggest margin of the night. McCalebb scored 5 more late points, but the winner was long decided.

"It was a great win for us. All the players contributed and we like that the fans had the opportunity of enjoying a brilliant win in our last game at home, capping a decent second leg. We had a great assist-to-turnover ratio, we played very good defense and I especially liked our approach at the beginning of the third quarter. When we were expecting a strong start from Fenerbahce, we came out with decisiveness, willing to hit first, and that gave us the opportunity of opening up an almost-definitive gap. We faced a great team tonight, with great players and a great coach, and that adds credit to our win."
OBRADOVIC, ZELJKO
Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul
"I want to congratulate Laboral Kutxa tonight for their win because they were better than us from the beginning to the end. Talking about basketball, and talking about any basketball team, one key aspect is motivation. And I saw my team played without any motivation. I feel terrible for the way we played tonight, especially for how the key players performed. They didn't care if the difference was 20 or 30, if they turned the ball over, if the opponent had the ball or took an open shot. You try to change things, rotate players and use the bench, but it's a problem when you cannot find the right fit. I feel really disappointed because I think my team is very selfish. I told them that, too, in the locker room, so they know my opinion. I don't surrender, though. We are in a difficult moment, and we have to do everything we can. But if you play like this, then nothing you can do will help. I will fight till the end, as we have a tough challenge in the Turkish League. I know there are people in the club who support me and that really want to do something big in this club. We have 25 million people who are supporting this organization and because of that I feel especially disappointed."

"It's true that if we had won a couple of more games at home we would be chasing the playoffs, but what is done is done. Everything is in the head, and we must look forward. We played this game with a lot of energy, for the pride of the club, for the fans, and for ourselves. Now, we feel better to face what is coming in the future. I feel comfortable here; I understand my role, to provide the team with my energy coming off the bench. After a long time without playing, and later getting injured, I feel great now and happy to be able to help this team."
JACKSON, PIERRE
Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul
"The team's mood is not good, obviously. Even though I'm new here and I don't really know everyone well, I saw a lot of guys tonight that don't feel good at all. It was a big blow for us, but we must keep playing the Euroleague till it’s over. We got a slow start, we didn't have a good approach coming into the game, and we didn' feel well or play good as a team. The Euroleague is very different from what I experienced in the States. It's more physical and there are a lot of great players over here. For me especially, it was difficult, coming here in the middle of the season but I'm still learning as a player, as a person and as a teammate."
