Lamayne Wilson - Budivelnik (photo bcbudivelnik.com)After an upset road win to start the season, Budivelnik brought its show home to the Ukraine on Tuesday and succeeded in shaking off a challenge by Siauliai of Lithuania to notch a 74-66 victory good enough for first place in Group C. Budivelnik is now 2-0, alone atop the group, which Siauliai fell to 0-2. Save for a couple times in the opening minutes, Budivelnik led throughout the game, but Siauliai kept challenging until the final minute, coming as close as 6 points. Lamayne Wilson paced the winners with a double-double of 20 points, of which he scored 15 in the first half, and 12 rebounds. Billy Keys followed him with 18 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals, while Zach Morley added 11 points. Wilson and Keys landed 4 three-point shots each. For Siauliai, Ricky Harris led the way with 21 points, while Zygimantas Janavicius added 13 while Vytautas Sarakauskas posted a double-double of 11 points, 13 rebounds.

Harris gave Siauliai a quick lead with a three-pointer, but Budivelnik responded with the next 7 points as Andy Betts scored and assisted Wilson on a dunk. Siauliai tied 7-7 on a Ricky Harris - Siauliai (photo bcbudivelnik.com)David Weaver layup, but another Budivelnik bust-out featuring 2 triples by Keys made it 15-10. Morley opened a 17-12 lead for the hosts that, despite another basket by Harris, got bigger on free throws such that Budivelnik held a solid 21-15 advantage after 10 minutes. Harris got the guests as close as 21-20 with a three-point play early in the second quarter, before the same pattern returned. This time, Budivelnik rattled off an 11-2 run featuring 5 points by Michalis Ansimovas. Back-to-back-to-back triples by Wilson soon established the first double-digit lead, 37-24. When Keys copied his teammate from the arc on the last play of the half, Budivelnik was in full control, 44-28.

Harris started the second half with another triple and added yet another soon while getting scoring help from Sarakauskas, Weaver and Edvinas Ruzgas to cut the difference to 50-40. After a tense series of misses, Siualiai resumed its assault on the lead with Edgaras Stanionis completing a 6-17 run with a three-pointer to make it 52-45. Keys then answered with a triple for Budivelnik that helped restore a 61-48 lead after 30 minutes. Back-back-shots from downtown by Harris and Sarakauskas got Siauliai as close as 7 points again, 63-56, early in the final quarter. Wilson reappeared then with 5 points in row to make it 68-58, but again Siauliai surged, thiss time with triples by Ruzgaz and Janavicius, to within 72-66. Only a minute remained, however, and when Andriy Agafonov started it by dunking a pass from Wilson, the fans of Budivelnik were assured of witnessing their team rise to first place in Group C!

BERROCAL, JOSEP MARIA
Budivelnik
"We won and that’s most important. But if we want to advance to the Last 16, we need to improve. We didn’t play for all 40 minutes. More or less we were good in the first half, but then we lost the second. Siauliai played another game in the second half, they played better. My players need to understand that they should give 100% on the court. The game is finished only after the buzzer, but they finished before."
SIREIKA, ANTANAS
Siauliai
"I’m glad that my team fought, but we had a lack of skills and maybe luck. Congratulations to Budivelnik, they played good. And I think tonight we played much better than a week ago at home against Buducnost. Our team is completely new, we have just two players from last season. We have played together just for two months, so we need more time to play as a team. But I feel we’re getting better. We’ll try to play harder against Budivelnik at home."

Players

MORLEY, ZACH
Budivelnik
"Siauliai played hard, they are a good, young and well-coached team. We had an opportunity to put them away and to get bigger lead. But they came back and continued to fight. That’s something we need to improve, but we knew that the game was going to be tough."
SARAKAUSKAS, VYTAUTAS
Siauliai
"We played against a very good team. We fought as hard as we could. But we made a lot of mistakes. Right now Budivelnik is a better team. But we’ll try, to beat them at home."
