ASVEL rolls over club records and Ulm

In its first 7DAYS EuroCup home opener in three years, ASVEL Villeurbanne thrilled its crowd with a club-record performance in a 108-77 blowout win on Tuesday over visiting ratiopharm Ulm. Both teams now have 1-1 records. Fantastic shooting and a 14-0 run soon after halftime put the game out of reach as ASVEL nursed 20-point leads for much of the second half. John Roberson led six double-digit ASVEL scorers with 21 points and his twin buzzer-beaters at the end of the first two quarters pretty much summed up the evening. Justin Harper added 19 points, Nicolas Lang 18, AJ Slaughter 17, David Lighty 14 and Charles Kahudi 11 for the winners. Ulm, which didn't lead after the first quarter, got 12 points from Luke Harangody, 10 from Da Sean Butler. ASVEL shattered three club records from its seven EuroCup seasons until this one: 108 points, 10 more than its previous best; 17 three-pointers made, 5 more than ever; and a performance index rating of 130, which was 8 better than before. ASVEL played without injured DeMarcus Nelson and Amine Noua, who had both scored in double figures a week earlier.

Harper's smooth triple and reverse in transition led ASVEL to a quick 7-2 advantage, but Ulm exited a timeout scoring in bunches on consecutive triples by Butler followed by a third in a row from Harangody to lead 12-13. ASVEL answered every score, however, and went up 18-15 on a slam by Darryl Watkins. Roberson was not to be outdone, however, and drilled twice from deep to put ASVEL up 24-17 after a quarter. Slaughter's 5 points in a row soon jacked the ASVEL lead to double digits, 40-27. Harangody and Per Guenther drilled threes for Ulm, but Lighty scored 7 quick points before Roberson beat the buzzer again for a 52-41 halftime lead. A 14-0 run early in the third, sparked by Kahudi and finished by Lighty, put Ulm's back against the wall at 66-43. The visitors used a 2-9 run to get closer but and Lang answered from deep as ASVEL cruised by 77-54 after 30 minutes. The fourth quarter was more of the same as a lot of young players for both teams got a chance to show their stuff but nothing would affect the fact that it was ASVEL's night, marking the team's great return home in the EuroCup!

Head Coaches

JACKSON, JD
ASVEL Villeurbanne
"I’m very happy, it was an important win tonight. For us, it was important to start the game setting the tempo. [We had] good game plan execution by the players tonight. We were a little permissive in the second quarter on the rebounds, but generally I’m very happy by the performance."
LEIBENATH, THORSTEN
ratiopharm Ulm
"I want to congratulate JD Jackson and his team, who showed a very impressive performance today. ASVEL moved the ball way better that we did and showed good things in defense. We didn’t find the way to slow them down. I was very disappointed with our game, but at the same time it was a pleasant atmosphere tonight."

Players

KAHUDI, CHARLES
ASVEL Villeurbanne
"We shot well and dominated the rebounds. That’s two good points tonight. We played good defense in order to stop them. We shared the ball with 21 assists tonight. That’s a very good thing. That’s a good team, but we are at home and it was important to keep our invincibility here. We executed our game plan from the beginning. They scored only 17 points in the first quarter. That’s interesting. We can improve defensively but that’s okay, that’s a good win tonight. "
MALEDON, THEO
ASVEL Villeurbanne
"That was a new experience for me tonight with my first game in the EuroCup. That’s important; it gives us the opportunity to learn faster. We need to be ready every time in case of injuries like tonight. We can’t stay on the floor and watch the others playing, we need to be active."
BRIKI, SOFIANE
ASVEL Villeurbanne
"It was a great experience to play in the EuroCup at home. We watched the games when we were younger. And now, to be on the floor, that’s great. I had just a few minutes, but I am learning one game at a time along with my teammates."
LIGHTY, DAVID
ASVEL Villeurbanne
"It was just our night, man. Everyone came ready to play. Everyone had high energy. You know we had a couple of players out, so we had to raise our level and we came out and performed well. We said it in the huddles: point spread is big, you never know what is going to happen in European competitions, so you gotta keep the pressure on them. If we take care of home in the EuroCup, I think we'll have a good chance to advance."
