Darussafaka keeps playoff dreams alive with derby win

Darussafaka Dogus kept its playoff hopes alive with a battling 73-67 victory in the Istanbul derby against Galatasaray Odeabank. The home team trailed by 7 points in the first quarter, but won the rebounding battle 50-34 and leaned heavily on an outstanding defensive effort, which restricted Galatasaray to just 28 points in the second half. The trio of Brad Wanamaker (22 points and 6 rebounds), Will Clyburn (15 points and 9 rebounds) and Scottie Wilbekin (13 points) were pivotal for Darussafaka, with Galatasrary’s challenge being led by Vladimir Micov’s 17 points and Austin Daye’s 11, while Tibor Pleiss had 8 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. The third quarter ended up proving pivotal, with Darussafaka launching a 19-5 run to establish a lead that it never relinquished.

Daye scored 5 consecutive points to give Galatasaray an early lead, and Pleiss helped extend the advantage to 9-16. But Darussafaka came back towards the end of the first quarter, which finished at 16-18 with Adrien Moerman’s buzzer-beating triple. The second quarter was closely fought with four lead changes and four ties, as Darussafaka sank 5 three-pointers. The second-half started with the visitors leading by 2, but Wanamaker, Wilbekin and Clyburn shined to give Darussafaka a double-digit lead. Galatasaray finished the quarter on a positive note with Sinan Guler’s layup plus one and a jumper from Micov, making it 61-52 with 10 minutes to play. The advantage was quickly reduced to 2 points as Darussafaka was held scoreless for four minutes, but Wanamaker stepped up to deliver a driving layup and a triple to end his team’s barren spell. A big dunk from Clyburn made it 68-61 with two minutes remaining, and Wanamaker appeared to have sealed the outcome with a three-point play, though Galatasaray produced a 0-6 charge to make it a nervy ending before the hosts held on.

BLATT, DAVID
Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul
"Galatasaray are a very strong team, a strong roster and well coached, so there was no way it was going to be easy. The fact we hung in there even though we didn’t play well in the first half, that showed character. We talked at halftime about relaxing on offense and being more intense on defense, and in the second half we restricted them to 28 points, and made some shots which made things easier. We’ve been a good rebounding team, and that’s a possession statistic. But we’ve got to go a better job converting those offensive rebounds into points. If not, you’re just wasting energy."

Players

ANDERSON, JAMES
Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul
"In the second half, we certainly played better basketball. First of all we stopped them. Then we pushed the ball more. We made the plays. We did a great play with Will [Clyburn]. I just threw up the ball hoping that he would catch it. And he caught it and did the alley-oop dunk. It was a good play and the fans got wild. We’re not done yet in the EuroLeague. We will keep on going and try to get a road win. And then come back home and try to win against Crvena Zvezda. We might still get this playoff spot."
ALDEMIR, FURKAN
Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul
"It was one of those must-win games. We can’t let ourselves lose any of the remaining games. That’s why we came out very focused. We have two games left in the regular season. We definitely want these two games to qualify for the EuroLeague playoffs. We can reach our goal if we go out and play with the same intensity and focus we had tonight against Galatasaray."
WANAMAKER, BRAD
Darussafaka Dogus Istanbul
"We are happy to get the win. Galatasaray are fighters and they didn’t quit, but we made a second- half run, toughened up and showed everyone we wanted to win the game. The pace of the game was key; when it’s a half-court game and they can set up, they’re really good, so we wanted to speed it up and play the game at our tempo."
DAYE, AUSTIN
Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul
"We played hard, but we just weren’t able to finish it out. In the second half we started slow and that’s when they went on a run and took control. Hopefully we’ll bounce back and get another EuroLeague win soon."
