Already-eliminated Belgacom Spirou Charleroi edged the first place Dinamo Banco di Sardegna Sassari 68-63 on Tuesday. Charleroi finished its Eurocup campaign with three consecutive victories but in the last place of Group B, while Sassari, previously qualified to the Last 32 from the first place, ends the regular season with 7-3 record. Joseph Trapani collected 24 points plus 9 rebounds for Charleroi which rallied from a 36-44 halftime deficit. Devin Green scored 17 points, and Darryl Watkins amassed 16 points plus 14 rebounds in victory. The visitors, without Drake and Travis Diener, got 15 points plus 9 rebounds from Omar Thomas. Linton Johnson collected 13 points plus 10 rebounds, Caleb Green scored 12, while Marques Green had 11 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals in a losing effort.
Thomas scored 7 points in the early going, including a triple for 6-14. Devin Green and Trapani sparked the hosts’ offense, but Sassari was firing from all cylinders. Giacomo Devecchi buried a three-pointer, helping the visitors to 23-30 at the end of the first quarter, and Juan Fernandez extended the lead to 9 points at the start of the second. Devin Green was Charleroi’s lone scorer in the quarter with 8 points, before a three-point-play by Watkins cut it to 34-37. Johnson and Caleb Green kept the visitors in front, and a basket-plus-free throw from Thomas extended it to 36-44 halftime lead. The hosts opened the third quarter with a 9-0 run to take 45-44 lead, and with another 7-0 spurt, capped by a triple from Karol Gruszecki, pulled away to 52-47. Gruszecki hit another three-pointer to open the fourth quarter, but the visitors tied it at 55-55 through Caleb Green and Johnson. The hosts never relinquished the lead, however, as Watkins and Trapani each scored a pair of baskets. Marques Green hit a triple, and Johnson had a jumper for 63-60, but Trapani and Gruszecki sealed it from the foul line.
