BCM Gravelines Dunkerque finished second in Group D despite a 86-73 road loss against CAI Zaragoza on Wednesday. Both teams tied for second place in Group D, each with a 6-4 record. An 85-67 home win in regular season Round 5 allowed Gravelines to get the tie-break advantage and finish second. Michael Roll led Zaragoza with 16 points. Damjan Rudez added 12 while Alex Urtasun, who joined the club this week, had 10 for Zaragoza. Steven Gray led Gravelines with 17 points. Yakhouba Diawara added 14 while John Holland and Jonathan Rousselle each had 10 for the guests. Zaragoza hit 13-of-17 shots and collected 5 steals in a near-perfect first quarter in which the hosts cruised to a 34-15 lead. Gravelines got within 47-38 at halftime and took the lead, 62-65, late in the third quarter. Zaragoza improved its defense and a 13-2 run allowed the hosts to seal the outcome, 81-69, it was not enough to beat Gravelines in the final standings.
Gray struck from downtown early in the game. He got help from Ousmane Camara and Holland to give Gravelines a 7-9 lead. Roll and Pere Tomas fueled an 11-1 run which Urtasun capped with a triple for a 18-10 Zaragoza lead. Rudez and Pedro Llompart struck from downtown, Albert Fontet added a three-point play and when Urtasun downed his second shot from beyond the arc, Zaragoza led 34-15 after 10 minutes. Rudez and Urtasun made it a 24-point game, 39-15, early in the second quarter. Holland hit a triple and Juby Johnson added two more in a 4-15 run that brought Gravelines a bit closer, 43-30. Rudez scored down low and a layup by Laszlo Dobos gave Zaragoza a 47-35 edge. Rousselle brought Gravelines within single digits, 47-38, at halftime. Steven Gray and Rousselle shined after the break, allowing Gravelines to tie the game, 49-49. Three-pointers by Jonathan Tabu, Tomas and Joe Jones gave Zaragoza some fresh air, 60-54. It didn't last long, as Gray had 8 points in a 2-11 run that gave Gravelines a 62-65 edge. Free throws by Llompart and a triple by Roll put Zaragoza back ahead, 68-67, after 30 minutes. Viktor Sanikidze followed a triple with a slam and Llompart soon gave Zaragoza a 76-69 edge. Roll soon boosted his team's lead to 81-69 with over 4 minutes left. Diawara and Rousselle allowed Gravelines to finish second despite this loss, as both teams will return to the competition in the Last 32.
