Fenerbahce triumphs in Istanbul derby

Reigning Turkish Airlines EuroLeague champion Fenerbahce Dogus Istanbul triumphed in its home opener by beating crosstown rival Anadolu Efes Istanbul 81-70 on Wednesday night at Ulker Sports and Event Hall. Fenerbahce improved to 2-1, while Efes its first win of the season. Jan Vesely led a balanced Fenerbahce attacked with 15 points and Brad Wanamaker filled the box score with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. Gigi Datome added 12 points, James Nunnally scored 11 on perfect shooting and Marko Guduric 10. Krunoslav Simon made 4 of 6 three-pointers for 10 points to lead Efes, but the rest of the team combined to shoot just 1 for 11 from downtown. Bryant Dunston added 14 points and Vladimir Stimac scored 12 in defeat.

Fenerbahce got its early points from the paint – including a Wanamaker-to-Vesely alley-oop – before Melih Mahmutoglu buried a three for a 9-4 lead. Dunston was unstoppable for Efes with 8 points before assisting frontcourt mate Stimac to make it 13-12. Then Simon fired in a triple for Efes’s first lead. Stimac capped a 0-9 Efes run with a layup and Simon’s second three in the final seconds of the first quarter extended the difference to 15-20. Back-to-back threes by Guduric and Datome got the crowd going and gave Fenerbahce the lead early in the second quarter. The lead changed hands a few more times before Erick McCollum put the visitors up 24-28, but Fenerbahce came right back and teams parted ways at halftime with the score tied at 34-34.

Kostas Sloukas and Vesely took charge as Fenerbahce made its move at the start of the third quarter; they had all the points in a 7-0 run that made it 47-38. A three-point play by Wanamaker extended the margin to double figures and Vesely and Nicolo Melli made highlight reel plays as the hosts started to coast. Efes captain Dogus Balbay made sure his team kept fighting, but a steal and layup from Nunnally left Fenerbahce ahead 62-52 through three quarters. An unsportsmanlike foul committed by Jason Thompson on Bryant Dunston resulted in 2 free throws for the latter, a three-pointer by Brock Motum and a 5-point Efes deficit. But shortly thereafter Simon committed an unsportsmanlike foul on Guduric, who converted a three-point play. And Thompson restored a double-digit margin, 69-59, with a foul line jumper. A three by Simon gave Efes hope, but Wanamaker all but sealed the outcome with a three with 95 seconds remaining.

Fenerbahce Dogus Istanbul
"Aggressiveness defensively [in the third quarter was the key to the victory]. We changed our defense. This gave us a chance to run and play a different kind of game. This was the key. We played defensively much better. Where we must improve is offense. We need to move the ball much faster. Sometimes we don’t know to be in good position offensively, to have good distance. These are things that will help us in the future. We have quality players that know how to do this. "
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Anadolu Efes Istanbul
"Congratulations to Fenerbahce. They deserved the victory. I think we fought as we can. In these moments we tried to play with energy, with toughness. But in the final of the game, our rotation was very short and they had more power, more energy and they beat us… I hope soon we will have Birkan Batuk back and the rotation will be longer. In the future we will for sure be more competitive."

Players

DATOME, LUIGI
Fenerbahce Dogus Istanbul
"I think we did a good job following the game plan. Also they had a lot of response to what we prepared. But we were very focused and kept on playing and having confidence in ourselves and our system. I am very happy that a lot of players contributed to the result. That is the key for a successful season."
NUNNALLY, JAMES
Fenerbahce Dogus Istanbul
"It was a hard fought game. They hit a lot of tough shots we had some defensive breakdowns, but I think all in all we played well in the second half and we were able to get the win at home. "
VESELY, JAN
Fenerbahce Dogus Istanbul
"We were a different team in the second half. It was the first game at home in the EuroLeague. New team and there was a little pressure on us. We tried to show that we can play together in front of our home fans. That stopped us in the first half, but in the second half we started playing our game and did all the things we prepared during the week. It was a good game in the second half. [Coach] will only be satisfied if we win all the trophies in June, until then he is never satisfied. He is a perfectionist. We have to go back to practice and do a better job. We got the win, it was a good game, but we have to get better every day. The season is long."
BALBAY, DOGUS
Anadolu Efes Istanbul
"We came out playing really hard in the first half and it was a tie game at halftime. It was a very low score; I guess both sides played really good defense in the first half. But second half they played better on offense and defense, because we received close to 50 points I think and that’s one of the reasons we lost the game. We gotta do a better job on defense, especially the second half coming out of halftime. "
