Players BC Azovmash vs. Valencia Basket - EB12 (photo Azovmash)Valencia Basket came back from a 10-point first half deficit and nearly squandered a 14-point fourth quarter lead before beating BC Azovmash Mariupol 76-70 on the road in the Eurocup. Bojan Dubljevic and Serhiy Lishchuk both scored 14 points as Valencia improved to 2-0 in Group D. Florent Pietrus added 12 points, Chris Quinn had 11 and Rafa Martinez chipped in 10 points in the victory. Mariupol dropped to 0-2 in the group despite 18 points from Oleksiy Pecherov and an outstanding showing from Manny Harris, who collected 12 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. Ivan Paunic scored 13 points for Azovmash, which also got 10 points from Miroslav Raduljica.

Azovmash jumped ahead 15-6 thanks to the long ball, including two triples from Paunic. Pau Ribas’ three-ball trimmed the margin to 19-13 but back-to-back baskets by Pecherov pushed the lead to double digits for the first time – 23-13 after one quarter. The hosts still led 27-17 early in the second quarter when Valencia started a comeback. Quinn and Martinez both hit from downtown and Dubljevic evened the game at 29-29 on a pair of free throws. Tadija Dragicevic and Harris temporarily gave Mariupol the lead back 35-29, but Pietrus took over with three scores to help the guests go into the locker rooms deadlocked at 40-40.

Valencia used a 0-9 spurt early in the second half to grab a 42-49 lead. After Radljica’s score trimmed the margin to 46-51, the guests from Spain went on a 3-13 run – with four different scorers including long balls from Martinez and Justin Doellman – to increase the advantage to 15 points, 49-64. Paunic nailed a trey late in the third to make it a 10-point game after three quarters – 54-64. Quinn’s basket with 6 minutes left in the game gave Valencia a 60-74 lead. But Azovmash refused to go down without a fight, holding Valencia scoreless for five minutes with Harris and Pecherov both tallying four points in a 10-0 Mariupol run to cut the deficit within 70-74. Quinn snapped the streak with a basket with one minute remaining for a 70-76 lead. But Pecherov and Harris both missed threes in the final 38 seconds as Azovmash would drop the game at home.

"First of all we are very sorry because our president died. Because of that we tried to win this game. I imagined dedicating a victory to him, but unfortunately we lost. We opened the game very well and our lead was 10-12 points. But it was not enough, because Valencia is a Euroleague team. We cannot use all our team in rotation and it is very difficult. We had two empty periods. I cannot be satisfied. We had one shot to tie the game, but missed. For me it is very important that our players showed character against a team with a much bigger budget. We tried to do something, but it wasn’t enough especially in our situation. We are playing very often."
PERASOVIC, VELIMIR
Valencia Basket
"We had some problems with injuries, so we have problems with rotation. Azovmash is a team with a number of good players. Azovmash always starts the game very well. They started pretty tough. In the second quarter, my team played better defense. Our big guys caused troubles for Azovmash, especially for Pecherov. And that was the key of the game."

Players

HARRIS, MANNY
Azovmash Mariupol
"We were well prepared for this game. Coach did great job preparing us for the game. We worked hard for most parts of the game. Valencia is a good team. Against them you must stay focused as much as possible. We just gotta do a better job."
LISHCHUK, SERHIY
Valencia Basket
"I'm very glad that I have an opportunity to play again in Ukraine, especially in Mariupol. I'm very thankful for the fan support here. We were a little disbalanced after a long journey. But during the game we took the initiative, we got our rhythm and tempo of the game. In the end of the fourth quarter we lost concentration when we led 15 points. But we finished the game successfully."
